----------------------------
It's 6 o'clock on a Monday morning, and I’m preparing myself for the morning rush that will come in about 15 minutes. I work in a small coffee shop as a barista, on the outskirts of Sydney, Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my job and the customers, but it can get a bit boring, every morning the same people come in at the same time to get the same coffee, then at lunch time half of those people will come back and get the same boring coffee again. Just as I am about to start making coffees for the rest of the employees the café phone rings. I answer it.
“Hello, this is Olivia speaking, how can I help you?” I chirped down the phone. “Oh hi there, is it too early to make a phone order for a coffee?” I checked the time to see if we were technically opened yet, we didn't open for another 13 minutes, but this guy sounded really nice. “No, not at all, what can I get you?” I grabbed a notepad and my pen ready to take the order “I would just like a small cappuccino, with one sugar, and can I make one strange request?” I froze for a minute, unsure of what to answer. “Yeah sure thing, what is it” “can I get the barista to make a pretty picture with the milk?” I giggled as I wrote it down. “Oh I am also going to have that to drink in, not takeaway, I will be there in 5 minutes, that will be for Lucas, thankyou I will see you soon” and with that he hung up. I was a little bit shocked at the phone call, but I quickly started to make the coffee.
Just as I was finishing heating up the milk, the door to the café was opened, I thought it was one of my co-workers so I didn't look up straight away. “Oh I am so sorry, you guys aren’t even open yet! I could have waited!” a young guy said from the counter, I looked up to find the most intriguing person to have ever stepped foot in this cafe. “No, no its fine! Am I right in assuming that you must be Lucas” he smirked, “yeah, and you’re Olivia?” I nodded, “you can take a seat if you want and I will bring your coffee over to you” I said happily. He nodded but continued to watch me make the coffee as I poured to milk into the coffee making a large design on it looking like a palm tree leaf. I looked up at him “you know cappuccinos have chocolate on top, did you want me to cover the picture up?” he just smirked and shook his head, and went and took a seat. I am completely intrigued by him and his actions. I carried the coffee over to him. “Are you a local around here?” I asked as I popped the coffee in front of him. “I moved here about a week ago”. “Oh that’s so cool, do you plan on coming in here often?” he looked up at me with a strange expression. “And why would you ask that?” I laughed. “Oh, well you see, I’m the barista here all week so if we have a regular come in here I like to remember their order, I was just wondering if I needed to remember your order.” He took a sip of his coffee without ruining the picture and smirked, “yeah the coffee is good enough to come back for” he said with a wink, “well I guess I’ll talk to you later then, I need to start serving now” I walked of with a wave towards him.
Our morning rush usually lasts about an hour and a half and feels like it takes forever, but today was different, it didn't seem to take as long even though it lasted almost 2 and a half hours today, but Lucas, was still sitting in the café on his laptop, I’m assuming doing work. All morning all I have wanted to do was start a conversation with him again. I’m very excited because in 20 minutes I get to take my 45-minute break, hopefully he will still be here. My co-worker charlotte nudged me and winked, she could see what was going on. Charlotte and I are really good friends, we actually rent an apartment together down the street, but she’s hardy ever there anymore, she’s always at her boyfriends house. “Oi stop staring at him, make yourself a coffee and go take your break early” she whispered to me and I just smiled as a reply and made myself a coffee and made Lucas another one, this time with a swirl on top.
Five minutes later I put another coffee on his table “on the house” I say with a smirk as I sit down across from him “do you mind if I join you?” I asked and he just chuckled while shaking his head. Hopefully I could find out more about this interesting soul. He closed his laptop and looks up at me, with those piercing blue eyes. "Alright Lucas tell me about yourself. Where are you from?" he laughed again "oh please, call me Luke!" he said through the laugh "i only said Lucas to make me sound like a successful business man" he laughed. I just laughed along "you are an interesting one!" i exclaimed. "Oh i know, you don’t need to tell me, anyways I’m from the western area of Sydney, a bit further inland, but I moved closer to the city in hopes to find some kind of career opportunity” he said suddenly serious. “Wow, big move! How old are you?” I asked “18, fresh out of school!” “Oh me too!” I exclaimed as I got a little too excited at the idea that maybe he isn’t out of my limit. “My turn! How come this is what you do?” Luke asked me. Wow he asks the deep questions straight up. “I – umm, I love the feeling of serving people and the feeling of the morning rush, the idea that some people are so dependant on their coffee every morning, that I can make their day by giving them a coffee, I love meeting such intriguing people like you, and hearing their life stories” I explained passionately. “You find me intriguing?” he asked. “The most intriguing yet,” I said with a smile as I stood up. “I’m sorry to cut this conversation short but I’ve got to get back to work” I said. “Yeah I should probably get going as well” he said almost a bit shy, “I’ll probably so you in the morning, bye Olivia” he said with a wave. Now back to reality for me.
