It's been twenty years since the outbreak. Humans are constantly fighting for survival, leaving families and friends for the sake of their own lives. Explosions and guns are constantly going off throughout the nation. The virus only takes a week of excruciating pain before beginning the process of transformation. The virus chooses its host by compatibility in the blood . If it's not the virus that kills you then it's your friends and family who do. Living in constant fear makes everyone paranoid and causes mass destruction of cities and small towns. Been living in this hell for ten and a half years with only one of my sisters,Tatiana. The other, Charlotte, has been missing for three years now.
Both of our parents had died by a head on collision when the virus was declared uncontainable. We were driving maybe around seventy miles per hour, hoping we could get to the nearest shelter before it was filled up. The driver in the other vehicle was shot point blank before the accident had occurred. I carried my sisters to the nearest hospital, not fully understanding what was going on but knowing our lives were in danger. The entire military base was there it seemed like. Guns in their hands and their index finger waiting to shoot the infected. Once they scanned all of us making sure there was no sign of being infected. They decided that I was old enough to be useful, so they gave me a choice.
“You either Fight, Breed, Or become a scientist. The only option you got.” the general had stated
I chose to become a scientist because I was a ten year old girl at the time who hated exercise and had taken both of my sisters as my kids. Once I was seventeen I began hand to hand combat along with going outside the cement walls on medical missions. Eventually we named the virus VZ because of the infected behavior. They have terrible eyesight only seeing shapes and shadows. What they lack goes into their hearing and sense of smell. Not only do they crave human flesh but also human blood. When someone is infected their blood curdles until it is a complete solid. The people who are infected crave what they lack.
“Break time nerds.” The intercoms echo out of the only medical building left that's intact.
“Hey good work Anya. I hope you got more information on those monsters.” Someone says to me resting their hand on my shoulder, waiting for me to look at them.
“Yeah thanks. You should go home and sleep, Linda.” I say watching a parasite wrap itself only on the outside of a blood cell as a protective shield through my microscope.
“It's Melissa.” She mumbled out before storming out of the room.
The intercom comes back on only allowing a high pitch siren causing me to jump off my chair. Breaking some of our samples due to the amount of pressure the noise has.
“ALRIGHT. Alright i'll get out of here.” I shouted, scribbling down the information I gained from the parasite.
I unzipped the plastic door that led to the decontamination room to get completely undressed. Walked toward the shower head to quickly rinse off any of the germs or bacteria I had on me.
“Hurry Your ass up lady you take longer to shower than a pornstar does.” A guy on the intercom screeches out as I wrap myself with a towel. I looked directly at the cameras and held up my middle finger to it before strutting my way out to my locker. I put on my tank top and tightly fitted ripped jeans carrying my combat boots.
As I opened the door my eyes instinctively closed shut as the sun beamed down on us few survivors. Eventually my eyes adjusted to the light difference and I continued to make my way to my assigned house which is heavily guarded by officers. I see kids playing soccer with a tattered ball running around with huge smiles. The ball accidentally rolls to me and the kids stop maybe two feet away from me. I lightly kick the ball with the side of my foot passing it to the kids. I make my way up to the dirt path that away from the town, heading back home to my sister. The sun slowly starts setting, making a beautiful ombre with yellow and orange colors in the sky. I saw my house in the distance as I continued to walk to the driveway to see if we had gotten any mail. My sister Tatiana squeezes past the guards racing towards me with open arms.
“Tatiana May! How many times have I told you to wait for me at the front door.” I scolded her as she stared down at her shoes.
“I know the rules. It's just that you're the only family I have left and there's no one here to play with. I can't even go outside without being followed. It's annoying.” She complained. She took my boots and started to carry them up to the house. I leisurely make my way up the porch stairs only to be greeted by the general's son, Carlisle. My sister absolutely adores him while I'm stuck with suspicions due to the fact that he's asked me out quite a few times already.
“Hello Anya. How was work?” He said with a concerned look. Before I could get a word out my sister interrupts by screaming at the top of her lungs.
“WHERE WERE YOU! YOU PROMISED ME YOU'D PLAY WITH ME!” She screamed at him, stomping her feet.
“TATIANA MAY. That's enough. Go to your room now.” I commanded pointing at the stairs with a stern look without giving it a second thought.
She stomped her way up the stairs with her deep red face from screaming. I make my way to my rustic kitchen where Carlisle follows to mince vegetables for a stew. I opened the fridge to see what type of meat we had only to be interrupted by a loud knocking at my door. As I took my first step toward the door, Carlisle indicated from me to stop.
“Lieutenant. What's up?” Carlisle questioned.
There was nothing after that I could hear so I picked out venison to chop into chunks for the stew. Suddenly Carlisle slams the door and starts to pack my mission bag.
“Excuse me, But I can do that myself.” I insisted, resting my hand on my hip staring down at him as he ignores me.
“They don't want you.” He grumbled out
I stood there confused at first then I was in shock. Shaking my head as I stood there unsteadily until I collapsed on my knees.
“No, this can't be true, she's only just a child. Why do they want her?” I stuttered but he ignored me again. I tried grabbing his arm wanting him to stop, but there was no use in it. He kept going.
Once he stood up I pushed him down only to be grabbed by him as we both fell. I'm sitting on top waiting for an answer as he avoids eye contact, holding my bag so tightly that his knuckles have turned white .
“Tell me now, Carlisle.” I growled out at him
He finally looks at me with tears forming in his eyes before shoving me off of him before marching upstairs for her. The guards hold me away from her as he throws her over his shoulder and walks out of the door. I kick and scream, twisting both of my arms trying to get free so I can stop him.Two guards move in front of the door not allowing me to leave, I realise why we don't have any other doors or windows. My knees eventually give out on me causing me to fall on the wood floor. I sob into my hands knowing there is nothing I can’t do to save her from this.
It seemed like weeks when it was only two unsuccessful days without my sister. I stopped showing up for work and just sat blankly at the white wall of my bedroom constantly thinking about her. Carlisle would show up once in a while to make sure I was holding up okay. I prayed every night for her to stay alive and to fight for her survival if she needed to.
