I watched the humans below me. Some were running to get to an unknown destination. Some were sipping coffee and leisurely drifting along. Others walked with their significant other. Laughing, kissing, holding hands. I sighed. Humans have no idea how lucky they are. How blessed they are to have what they have. Normalcy. Yet, they waste it away in trying to find the unknown. Vampires, werewolves, God. And the question is, what then? What will you do after you have found what you were looking for? How will you treat us? You can barely handle people of different skin colour, what makes you think you will treat someone who drinks blood, or turns into a wolf any different? I cocked my head to the side when I saw Austin appraoching rather clumsily to the tree I currently sat in. His golden blond hair seemed to shine in the sunlight. The splash of freckles on his face were almost non-existant from where I was sitting and his thin lips were pressed together in annoyance. He searched the tree until his hazel eyes landed on me "Andrew!" He called up at me. "Get down here, we gotta get going!" I scanned the crowd once more, still pretending what it would be like if I were amongst them. "Andrew! Quit your dilly dallying!" Austin shouted up at me again, earning some weird glances from the humans who didn't see me up here. I rolled my eyes and hopped down. Back to the dog life.
"Alpha Darren wants to talk to us," Austin began walking, with me next to him. I gave him a questioning look.
"What does he want to talk to us about?" I asked.
Austin looked at me, a bit frustraited. "You mean you don't know? He's your dad!"
"Yeah, and he's also the alpha," I pointed out. "That doesn't mean he tells me everything."
"Well," Austin paused to watch some girls passing us, "I was hoping you knew. Cause I have no idea." I shrugged. "Oh, she's hot," Austin had his eyes set on a blonde girl. I studied her. She wasn't all that. "Man, when am I gonna find my mate? I'm fifteen!" Austin groaned. I only spared him a side glance. Honestly, I didn't understand why he wanted to meet his mate already. I was terrified. One day, I'm gonna love a girl so much that I would do anything for her, and that terrifies me.
Austin and I cut off from the normal pathway and went through the park and into the woods, like we did everyday from our sixty minutes of outside time. As werewolves, we were trained not to trust anyone outside the pack. Therefor, we were homeschooled and only allowed one hour of human interaction to keep us sane, I suppose. We continued to walk deep into the forest until the houses came into sight. Our pack consisted of three families. Mine, the Roberts. My father was the alpha, and my mother the Luna. Austin's family, the Graces. they were Austin, his father, Arnold, the Beta, his wife, Christene, and Austin's younger brother, Rayond. The last family was the Drayards. They were just Eddie, and his pregnant wife Jamie. We were a small pack, who didn't sound much like werewolves at all. My dad came up with the idea to change our last names long before Austin and I was born. It was an easier way to keep hunters and rival packs from disrupting us.
"Boys!" My father's voice boomed as we walked through the gate. "Come on! We need to have a chat."
My heart pounded in my chest. Normally, when my father said that, that meant months of torture for Austin and I. My father motioned for us to follow him inside my house. He then sa on the biggest armchair and Austin and I sat on the couch opposite it. "So boys," My dad began. "you are both almost sixteen. I was sixteen when my real training to become alpha started," He paused to study my face. "Andrew, you have shown the characteristics of a great leader. And, as the alpha's son, you are expected to be the next alpha," All of these things I knew. The day after I turned sixteen, I will be expected to pay full attention to pack business and successfully help my father make decisions that will affect the pack. At the same time, I must gather up at least ten other wolves to make a real pack, and when I'm twenty one, I must challenge my father in a battle, and if I win, I become the new alpha, if I lose, I must leave the territory, with my pack. Forever.
