You're on the way to your friend Miyou's place, admiring the scenery of Tokyo in the spring. Along the road, the friendly faces and kind words of the neighborhood people politely greet you as you skip down the way. Mr. Kojima, a kind old man that lives nearby, waves at you as you pass and you wave back gleefully. You halt for a cat approaching you. It has a collar, so you assume it belongs to somebody. Kneeling down, you stroke its head and look at the name tag.
"Hi, Tora," you say sweetly. The cat sniffs your hand and licks it. You pet the animal gently to earn its trust before picking it up and carrying it a short distance to the address on the back of its name tag. Shifting the small feline to one arm, you knock on the door.
A young woman opens it and smiles brightly at the sight of the animal.
"Tora!" she exclaims, taking the cat from you carefully. "Thank you so much for returning her! You're a very sweet kid."
"No problem, Miss," you reply, bowing to the woman respectfully. "You have a cute cat. She's really nice."
"Yes, she's just a sweetheart, isn't she? My son would have been devastated if we had lost her." The woman bounces the cat a little bit, scratching her chin.
"You have a son?" you ask, curious.
"Yep. He's around your age by the looks of it."
You smile.
"What's his name?"
"Kenma. He's a sweet boy, but he doesn't make a lot of friends. I'm glad that he has at least one though. They're out together right now."
"Oh, really? That's cool! I'm actually on the way to meet with a friend right now," you remark proudly.
"That's nice," she says.
"On that note, I should get going. I don't want to keep her waiting."
"Goodbye, then."
"Bye." You wave to the woman and return to the road.
Your mind wanders as you're skipping and you begin to think back to when you and Miyou were 5 years old and playing at the public pool. You giggle at the thought, and let your memories take you wherever they want.
Before you know it, you're standing in front of her house. You smile instinctively.
You walk up the cement steps and onto the porch carefully so you don't fall. The large, white house towers over you and for some reason, that feeling of being so small compared to the building excites you a little. You knock twice and wait until the door opens. Once it does, you're immediately greeted by the smell of cookies and the endearing face of Miyou's mother. You ask if Miyou can come outside.
"She's eating lunch at the moment, but I'll tell her you're waiting for her." she replies as she turns away from the door.
You wait patiently at the door, sitting down on the concrete steps and staring upward at the clouds. It didn't seem like rain was coming, like your mom warned you it would. The clouds were white and fluffy and the sun was shining down on the freshly cut, green grass. The small breeze flew, subtly shaking the branches of the flowering trees. The sky was so blue and bright. You start to daydream about what the future would be like. Would you fall in love? Get a job? Start a family? You fiddle with your umbrella subconsciously.
"______-senpai!!" you hear from behind you.
You turn your head to see the brunette 9-year-old you've been friends with for 5 years standing in the doorway of her house.
"Hi, Miyou-chan!" you say, standing up.
"You ready to go?" she asks, wielding her umbrella over her shoulder.
"Yep! This is gonna be the biggest, best-est mud pie ever!" You respond.
You both jump in the air as high as you can and high five.
You tell Miyou what happened with the cat. When you mention Kenma's name and the information his mom gave you, she smiles with anticipation and excitement.
"I've always wanted to meet an introvert! They're so mysterious and edgy. It kinda hot," she says cheerfully as you both begin to walk away from the house. You stare her for a second.
"You're 9, Miyou-chan. No," you say, disappointed she's even thinking about boys right now.
"Shut up, you're gonna want someone some day too!"
"Yeah, right. Not while I'm 10 at least. We're too young for love just yet."
"Aw, does that mean you don't love me?" She pouts.
"What? Not fair, Miyou-chan, that's different! Yeah, I...I love you, but not like that!"
You both bicker, poke fun, and laugh with each other until you make it to the woods behind your house. You smile at the big, green, luscious trees as the sun just barely breaks through the blanket of leaves above.
"Go get the hose! I found a really good spot over here!" Miyou shouts, pointing to a large patch of unbothered dirt in front of the entrance to the woods.
"On it!" You say, grabbing the nozzle and pulling the hose, unraveling it, over to Miyou.
You and Miyou spend hours getting your hands messy as ever and talking. The end result is an extremely wide splotchy blob of mud, sticks, and decorative leaves. You giggle and pretend to eat the 'pie' you two worked so hard to make. Eventually, clouds roll over and darken the sky. You both spray your hands with hose water and pull out your umbrellas.
"Wanna race back to my place with me?" Miyou asks, opening up her pink Hello Kitty umbrella.
"Sure," you reply with a nod. You both race each other and the rain back to Miyou's house.
Miyou wins and, knowing her this isn't surprising, teases you and rubs her victory in your face.
"Alright, Miyou, that's enough. Come inside, I have dinner waiting for you on the table," her mother says, opening the door for her.
Miyou heads inside and her mom stands in silence, staring at you with a warm smile.
You wave uncomfortably at her with an awkward smile in return.
"Thank you," she says briefly.
"Eh? What for?" you ask, confused.
She hesitates, thinking to herself.
"I wanted to thank you for being there for Miyou. She's struggling with some things right now, and it's a big help that you're here to keep her happy."
"Oh! No problem, Enoyaka-sama, but I'm not here to make her happy. I'm here because I like her! I care about Miyou-chan, and yeah, I want her to be happy, but I also want to be there and be happy with her! She's my friend after all."
"Aren't you mature for a grade-schooler?"
You chuckle.
"See you soon, Enoyaka-sama!" you say, turning around.
You take a step forward as the first few drops of rain hit the ground. You open up your umbrella and go down the steps, hearing the sound of the door shutting behind you and the pouring rain ahead.
Tokyo looks so nice in the rain, you think to yourself, holding your umbrella upright above your head.
During the walk home, you see a small boy sitting in the rain beside the house you returned Tora to. Thinking about the information the nice lady gave you, you approach him.
