Rune pulled on her headphones, scrolling through her music on her scroll. Finding a song she liked, Rune tapped the song and opened a comic. It was nearly midnight, and Rune was chilling in her favorite bookstore. (A/N: It was a Dust shop, but it sold some of her favorite comics. Also, yes. I am aware that this scene takes place in Volume 1, but I wanted to include it since I was re-watching RWBY while writing this, so sue me.) Rune didn't notice the band of thugs stealing from the shopkeeper until she felt a tap on her shoulder. Turning around, Rune pulled off her hood and stared quizzically at the henchmen standing in front of her. The henchmen pointed to his ears, gesturing for Rune to take her headphones off.
"Yes?"
"Put your hands in the air!"
"Are you...hijacking me?"
"Yeah!" Rune rolled her amber and green colored eyes (A/N: Woah there buddy! We got a Faunus with heterochromia?! {2 different colored eyes} Isn't that amazing?!), pulling out her sniper rifle. The henchmen looked at her fearfully, wondering what she was going to do with the gun. Rune smirked, hopping onto the end of the handle, she cocked the gun, firing a bullet that sent her and the henchmen flying out the window of the shop. The rest of the henchmen rushed out, an orange-furred fox Faunus following close behind. Rune smirked as her sniper rifle transformed into scythe mode, the blade digging into the ground. Rune's ears poked out from underneath her hair, her fluffy red tail appearing from under her skirt.
"Aw shit..." Rune heard the orange-furred Faunus curse under his breath, a small smile creeping across her lips. Picking up her scythe from the ground, Rune tossed it over her shoulder with ease, scanning the group of thugs. "You're a small bunch, especially small for robbing from such a large Dust shop. You sure you guys can carry all of it?" Rune teased, leaning on her scythe. The fox Faunus stepped forward, tipping his hat to Rune. "My my, and aren't you a little young to be waving around such a big weapon? And why are you alone on this, fine evening?" The fox sneered, his green eyes glowing.
Rune snorted, starting to laugh. The henchmen looked at each other, then looked at their leader, all of them looking very confused. "What's so funny little wolf?" Rune wiped her tears away, taking a moment. "What gave you the idea I was alone?" Just as Rune's words left her mouth a loud growl echoed from somewhere up above. Looking up, the henchmen were startled by the glowing yellow light that seemed to be aiming straight for them. The henchmen and the fox were thrown back by the force of the yellow light landing in the middle of them. Rune recognized her older sister, Yuri, once the light dimmed and a long jaguar tail curled upwards from behind Yuri's back.
"It's bad manners to assume a woman is by herself, gentlemen," Yuri said in a sarcastic voice, pounding her fists together. Rune nodded, looking around at the group of henchmen scattered around in a semicircle. "Yuri, try to stop almost killing people with your semblance." A voice said from the shadows. Yuri did a full 180 to face the voice, though Rune just turned her head. Two more female Faunus emerged, one of them a panther, and the other an arctic fox. Yuri flicked her tail dismissively, "Yeah, yeah, Brooke. You don't have to keep telling me that." The panther chuckled a little at Yuri's stubborn behavior. "Anyways, moving on. Rune, are we ready to wrap this up?" The arctic fox called out. Taking one last glance at the henchmen who were starting to pick themselves back up, Rune nodded. She and Yuri both backed up as the panther and the fox took their places.
Rune shouted, "Willow! Brooke! Checkmate!" The arctic fox glared at Rune for a moment before unsheathing her sword. The panther, known as Brooke, pulled out her gambol shroud, though she left the casing on her back.
"Ready?"
"Always."
Rune watched with growing pride as Brooke and Willow rounded up the bandits, Willow using her ice, and Brooke using the stretchy part of her gun. (A/N: I don't know what that part is called- I was gonna say 'the grappling part of her gun' but it's up to you guys.) It was over in about a minute. All four of them gathered to look at their work, though Rune was having a hard time concentrating. "What's up Rune?" Yuri asked, tilted her head. "We're missing one..." Rune counted the henchmen, realizing that the fox Faunus had escaped. Rune facepalmed, her ears and tail twitching irritably. Yuri frowned, looking over the group of henchmen. "Oh! Do you mean the fox? Nah, we caught em." Rune raised her eyebrow. "What'd you mean by that?" Yuri pointed to a bundle of orange fur a few yards away.
"He tried to sneak off, so I caught him," Yuri stated proudly, puffing out her chest. Rune couldn't help but laugh at her sister's childish ways. Brooke came up to them, holding her scroll. "Oliver sent some huntsmen and huntresses to pick them up. They should be here shortly." Brooke stated, her ears twitched as she felt Yuri staring at her. She looked up, making brief eye contact with Yuri. Yuri had a small smirk on her face. "What?" Brooke asked, crossing her arms. "Nothing, just thinking," Yuri said, holding her hands behind her head. Her tail waving excitedly. Rune hadn't noticed Willow walking up to her until she heard Willow clear her throat. Flicking her ears, Rune turned to Willow, folding her scythe back up. "Yeah?" Willow was scratching her chin, her ears and tail twitching nervously.
"Uh- You did good, I guess." Willow managed to say. Rune grinned foolishly, walking up to Willow and hugging her tightly. "Awww!~ Willow, you did great too!~" Willow struggled in Rune's grip, pushing and kicking until she finally just let Rune hug her. The four of them gathered around each other as a Vale Police Ship arrived, they helped load the prisoners into the ship, waving good-bye as it took off.
"Soo...." Yuri said after a while. "Where to now?" The group stayed silent for a few seconds before Brooke broke the awkwardness. "I'm sure I saw a cafè open down the street, how about we get something to eat before heading back to Beacon?" Yuri agreed by the rumbling of her stomach, she smiled nervously. "Guess that means, I'm paying!" Yuri said, leading the way down the street even though she went the wrong way first. Brooke led the group from there, Yuri walking right next to Brooke, her tail occasionally snaking towards Brooke's before pulling away at the last second.
Rune had a feeling that Yuri had a small crush on Brooke, though she couldn't tell if Brooke felt the same way quite yet. "I don't understand why they aren't dating already," Willow whispered to Rune, the two of them were also walking together. Rune giggled, "I agree." Yuri's ears swiveled back. She must've caught what Willow said because Rune could see the tips of her ears turn red. Rune made a mental note to bring this conversation back up when they reached the cafè.
Willow and Rune chatted for a while until they heard Brooke hiss angrily. Brooke was rarely angry, so when they heard her hiss Rune and Willow both drew their weapons. "Who are we fighting? Grimm? Bandits? Ooo~ Evil Grimm bandits?" Rune snickered foolishly when Willow elbowed her in the ribs. The two of them only realized there was no real threat when they noticed Yuri and Brooke arguing a few yards away.
"Why did you drop it?"
"What do you mean, why did I drop it? It was clearly your fault!" Brooke was looking down at the smashed scroll in a puddle of water. Yuri was clearly not a person to drop something like a scroll into a puddle of water, but Rune wouldn't be surprised if she did. Rune glanced at Willow before stepping between the two. "Brooke, come with me." Rune locked arms with Brooke, dragging her down a nearby alleyway while she left Yuri to Willow.
When Rune had stopped dragging Brooke, she was so furious that her hair was sticking out at all angles. "Okay, what's the issue?" Rune said, trying to calm Brooke down. "It's Yuri! She's just so...clumsy! And- and foolish! And..." Brooke's hair flattened, her cheeks turning a bit red. "And..." Rune smiled, her tail wagging. "Well, sounds like you two have some unresolved tension, so let's go resolve it!" Brooke was startled as she was dragged back down the alleyway and out onto the street where Yuri and Willow were talking. Rune looked at Willow who nodded. Once Rune and Brooke had gotten a few feet away from Yuri and Willow, Rune and Willow pushed Yuri and Brooke together. They backed away to watch as Yuri and Brooke's noses met. Rune held back a laugh as they each turned cherry red. Rune stumbled onto the street, unaware of a car coming her way. Willow was the only one to notice.
"Rune!" That was the last word Rune heard before a loud honking noise deafened her, the car crashing into her side.
