I am writing this story because the end of Allegiant was too sad. I do not claim these characters or settings. I am simply writing for fun.
Tris
I wake lying on a cold, metal table, and there is a boy squeezing my hand. He has short, brown hair and is faintly crying. Tobias. I try to move, but the pain and paralysis is preventing me from moving an inch. I try to shout his name, but all that erupts from me is a faint gasp. Suddenly, Tobias jumps up, and stares at me me. I stare back, releasing another moan for him to hear.
"Tris," is all he can muster.
"Tobias," I finally whisper.
Frantically, he picks me up and carries me to an office that I've never seen before. Almost choking, he says to a -what looks like a doctor- "she's- she's alive!"
"Let me see her," he says, astonished.
"No," Tobias flatly objects.
"Tobias, it's okay; let him," I blurt out.
Tobias slowly nods with wide eyes that are filled with sadness, sorrow, and joy altogether. I haven't thought that he could have been mourning for a long time now. That he had lost me. I couldn't imagine what it would be like if I lost him.
"Let's take her to the lab," he mutters. Tobias doesn't respond. All he does is hold me tight, and his grip never falters. Soon, we emerge in a lab that has another metal table on it. I'm really starting to hate metal tables. The "doctor" checks my bullet wounds while Tobias grasps my hand like if he lets go, I will fall away into nothingness. The man taps on the screen and mutters something under his breath.
"Obviously, her survival has succeeded due to the death serum."
"What," Tobias says, sounding annoyed.
"Well it looks like the serum only slowed her body, including her heart rate, due to her divergence." I still wince at that word. Divergence is nothing other than being genetically pure. It means nothing here. Then why do I ponder at it.
"So when she got shot indeed twice, her heart had slowed then stopped. But before she could have died, her heart picked up. It was only going so slow.
Tobias just stares at me with thoughtful eyes, unwilling to look away.Chapter 2
After Tobias took me to our room, I finally could move again. He keeps asking me questions like "do you want some water" or "do you need another blanket". And finally I get him to shut up by kissing him which I don't mind. I was planning on doing that anyway.
"Tris," he says between kisses. " I love you."
"I love you, too," I say.
"I thought I lost you."
Suddenly he pulls back and I don't want him to; I just want him; I want sleep and rest and him. I am this thing that struggles toward him; that strains to be with him. And I almost lost that. I almost lost him. He almost lost me.
I try to pull him towards me again, but he takes my hands and pulls them away.
"Let's go tell everyone that you're not dead."
"Yeah," is all I can say.
He helps me walk to the room where Tobias was mourning over me. There everybody stares at me with wide eyes. But then Christina squeals and wraps her arms around me. Ignoring the bullet wound pain, I hug her back.
Everyone either cheers or embraces me. Finally, I grow tired of this and sit in a chair.
"So, you're not dead." Zeke says.
"Nope," I say, laughing. It feels good to not be in danger anymore.
Tobias walks me to our room when the announcement of my survival has set in.
We talk for a bit and then guess what.
Caleb walks in.
Caleb, of all people.
"Umm, hi," Caleb mutters, nervous. "Uh, I would like to speak to Beatrice...alone." Surprisingly Tobias leaves the room. But then he whispers to Caleb, "I'm not done with you yet," and leaves the room. Caleb stands awkwardly, obviously afraid.
"I-"
"It's Tris," I interrupt.
"Right..."
"Well, you wanted to talk to me." I say, angry.
"I just wanted to thank you for saving my life and all."
"Yeah."Chapter 3
I still don't trust him. I shouldn't. He betrayed me.
"Listen, um," he looks around like there's someone lurking. "I don't trust Four: he's obviously a boy from a shady background. And you shouldn't either."
I am too stunned by this to respond. And right before I yell at him. Tobias storms in.
"I heard what you said," he shouts. "All of it."
"I- uh um," he stutters. Before he can finish, Tobias has him pinned against the wall. I don't blame him for listening in, but I wish I could have a private conversation with him. Tobias punches him in the jaw,and Caleb falls half unconscious.
"Tobias," I gasp. I hate Caleb. I don't know why I care about him. Tobias doesn't seem to hear me, or he doesn't care. Tobias slams him against the wall, anger in his eyes. This time Caleb does go unconscious. Tobias gives him another punch. Then he drags Caleb somewhere. A few minutes later Tobias emerges into the room. He strokes my hair for a moment. He fits his lips to mine. I sigh a sigh of relief. He smells like water and fresh air. He smells safe.
"I carried Caleb to the infirmary. I'm sorry if I overreacted."
"No, he deserved it; he so deserved it, I say.
He gives me a weak smile. I take a short nap while Tobias waits in line to get dinner. I have to admit, I'm starving. Dying can work up an appetite. Later he returns with two plates that each have a potato, a chicken breast, peas, and an orange.
"Mmm," I say.
After we finish, Tobias and I lay down in bed and sleep. That night I dream of Caleb. Tobias is tied down to the floor. He tells me to shoot him and I don't. So he takes out his own gun and points it at Tobias. I take my gun and push the barrel to my forehead.
I yell, "If you kill him, you lose me to!"
Quickly, he knocks the gun out of my hand and fires at Tobias. Tobias loses all motion and slumps. Gasping, I grab the gun, my hand shaking. I push the barrel to my head and pull the trigger.
Then I wake up.
I wake up with tears soaking my face. Tobias grabs me.
"What. What's wrong?"
"I- I just had a nightmare. I'm okay," I say. Though I'm really not. He wraps me in his arms. My head is on his chest. His heartbeat is steady where mine is racing.
I knew Caleb did not trust Tobias. I must be paranoid. Is he really that much of a traitor? No, no he would never hurt anyone. But he did sell me out to Jeanine Matthews just so I could be executed.
