Byleth watched as Rhea fell, the city of Fhirdiad burning in the light of the dawning sun. He saw the survivors flee in terror towards the Imperial Army as they desperately tried to escape the inferno. Unfortunately for them, the Imperial soldiers were not in a merciful mood as they cut down noble and commoner indiscriminately. The Black Eagle Strike Force celebrated as they truly relaxed for the first time in years. Byleth stared at Sylvain and Ashe as they cheered alongside Casper and Petra, their weapons discarded on the ground. He remembered them as they fought at Dimitri's side to repel the invaders in his second life.
Goddess, was this life really only his third? He felt as if he had been though more than just three wars. He had tried to convince Edelgard to stop her warpath, but it was in vain as the whispered promises of the Agarthans pulled her away from his council. They had planted evidence against him, framing him for the crime of sabatogting the war efforts. (Although he had indeed done just that once or twice.) It was known that he was against the war, so Edelgard believed the evidence without too thorough of an investigation. He had actually had to use two Divine Pulses to escape Hubert's assassination attempt. Hubert was certainly well-prepared. Byleth knew this life was a failure as well. As he felt the Crest Stone in his heart weaken, he knew this was his last chance. Sighing, he tapped into the pool of divine energy, and used it to throw the world back almost 7 years
This time, Byleth swore, this is the last time.
He was done interfering. He knew now that it was pointless to try to change the future. He was no longer naivë enough to believe that he could stop fate. Rhea and Dimitri would go insane, Edelgard would try to conquer the world, and Claude...
Claude did his own thing. Byleth was sometimes still surprised at Claude's actions. His father would be killed by Kronya. Either Solon or Thales would destroy Remire Village. In the end, Byleth knew that he would never change anything significant. There were key points in time, events that could not be stopped.
He had lead each house once. He knew everything about every one of the students at Garreg Mach. It was time for him to join the fourth house. The Ashen Wolves. He would hide in Abyss. Nobody would look for him there.
And with that last thought, he woke up in Remire Village.
