Book: In The Shadows
Chapter 1: Pilot
Word Count: 3106The boy who was known as Caden Gilbert stood in front of his parents grave, hands in his pockets and an emotionless expression on his face. He had been holding all his feelings in since they had died. Not once letting the sadness and despair overtake him.
His siblings needed him and he couldn't break down and cry. He needed to be strong and there for them. God, knows they couldn't deal with each other.
But there was consequences to holding your emotions in. Now, he couldn't feel anything. He blocked out all of it. Including happiness. He didn't even remember the last time he smiled without it being fake.
He sighed as he said, "I miss you so much. I wish you were still here. We need you." He brought his hand up to run through his hair. "Why did you have to leave us?"
The teenage boy stood in the lonely graveyard for another couple minutes before he forced himself to leave. His first day of school was in an hour, unfortunately and he didn't want to be late.
He went to his car and got in, making his way to school. His mind was elsewhere as his hands gripped the wheel.
His parents had drowned after their car had ran off the road and his sister was lucky to survive it. Even though he wasn't in the car, driving still made him shake as he tried to push out the the thoughts of them.
He was close to the school now and he didn't notice the boy walking across the road. When he did notice, he slammed his foot on the brake and gasped, eyes going wide and heart beating wildly.
He put the car in park and got out, rushing towards the boy he didn't recognise and spewing apologies. "I am so sorry. I was - was distracted and I didn't see you."
Stefan looked over at the boy and held up his hand, trying to calm him down. "It's okay. You didn't hit me. I'm fine. Just... maybe be more focused when you drive?" He suggested with a light smile.
"Yeah." Caden nodded. "That's probably a smart idea. I really am sorry."
"Calm down." Stefan said gently, noticing the other males breathing was getting heavier. "I'm Stefan. I'm new here."
"Oh, great. I nearly ran over you on your first day." Caden shook his head, trying to get the negative thoughts to leave his head. "I'm Caden and I've lived here all my life. Are you sure your okay?" He just had to ask again.
Stefan held out his arms and slowly spun around. "All good but if you want to make it up to me, it would be great if you could show me to the front office so I can get my things."
"It's the least I could do." Caden breathed out. A honk sounded from behind them and that's when he realised he was still parked in the middle of the road. "Um, just let me park my car. Stay near here so I can find you."
