Chapter 14

**Emma’s POV**

What just happened? Aaron was just talking to me and then, I felt his hands slip away and his body slump.

“Aaron?” I poked him.

He didn’t move. I’m no doctor, but I don’t think his heart machine was supposed to stop beating.

I panicked. What am I supposed to do? After quickly calming myself down, I pressed the nurse button on his bed and ran out of the room, screaming like a mad person for the doctor.

“What are you doing?!” a nurse hissed at me.

“My- my boyfriend…he- he’s in trouble!” I say, obviously out of breath.

Her face turned white and then she ran to Aaron’s room.

The doctor was already in there, and as I try to enter, I am pushed back by a strong arm. It was Sam. A worried look was on his face as they wheeled Aaron out and down the hall. I try to run and follow him, but Sam pulls me back, hard.

“Sam, what’s going on? What’s wrong with Aaron? Why won’t you let me go see him? What the hel-”

“Emma!” he shakes my shoulders roughly. I look into his eyes. “Aaron’s heart stopped, he might die.”

He had confirmed my worse thought. I crumpled to the floor and sobbed into my sleeve. Aaron might die?

**Tyler’s POV**

After stopping by Starbuck’s and grabbing a coffee for Sarah, I drove to school. When I pull up to park next to her car, I can see the worried look on her face.

“Hey!” I say, cheerfully jumping out of my car and handing the drink to her.

After seeing her tears fall, I knew something was up. “What’s wrong, love?”

She looked at her tan leather boots. After taking a deep, shaky breath, she said, “Ty, it’s Aaron.”

“What about him? He going to be fine, I just talked to him.” I wrapped my arms around her small waist to reassure and comfort her.

She shook me off. “Ty I’m serious.”

I looked at her. “What are you talking about?”

“His heart stopped.” She mumbled. I could barely hear her.

“What?”

“Please don’t make me say it again.” She started to cry harder.

“What kind of sick prank are you trying to pull?!” I yell, attracting multiple stares from the kids around us.

“I’m serious!” she hissed, trying to quiet me.

“Sarah, this isn’t funny! You better cut it out right now!” what the heck was wrong with her? Who does she think she is, trying to tell me my best friend was dead; I just talked to him!

“Tyler, please…” she started, but I didn’t give her time to finish.

I did the impossible.

I slapped my girlfriend.

The look on her hurt and red face bore into my soul, but she had no right to pull a prank on me like that. Without even saying “I’m sorry” to her, I climbed back into my car and sped away toward the hospital. In my rear mirror, I can see her pull herself together and jump in her car, too. She was following me.
