The silver gray Mercedes S600 cruised down the freeway, travelling south. Elias was sitting in the front passenger seat with so much soft leather around him that he could barely hear the 389 horsepower, 6-liter engine. At eighty miles per hour the engine was only idling. But Elias could feel the power of the car. One hundred thousand pounds worth of German engineering. It was his aunt's favorite car. It also happened to be the same car she came to pick him up in.
She was there ready and waiting for him the minute he stepped foot outside the airport. Elias couldn't remember the las time he saw his aunt, but from what he could see it looked as if she didn't age a bit even though Elias knew that wasn't the case. She was most likely in her thirties but looked as if she was in her twenties. Age was a weird thing, wasn't it?
Elias glanced out the car window, watching as the world outside flew passed him in a blur of orange, brown, and yellow. Those dull colors did nothing to stand out against the gloomy weather outside. When he arrived in Forks, Washington Elias was expecting the warm rays of sunlight to fall upon his tanned skin, but instead he got the complete opposite. At a glance, it looked as if it were about to rain any second however, he knew it wouldn't.
As the car came to a slow stop, Elias caught sight of the house. The house was identical to it's neighbours right down to the shade of paint on the iron balconies, but Elias knew which one was his aunt's right away. It was box-shaped with it's front door dead center, four small windows near each corner and constructed of the same red brick. A path made out of leftover bricks made a shallow S-shape between the gate and the front door.
As his aunt put the car in park in front of the driveway, Elias unbuckled his seatbelt and opened the passenger side of the door. He slid out of the car and closed the car door behind him; his aunt following his lead. The ginger haired woman gave him a bright smile as she held his duffel bag of clothes in her right hand. Elias strechted out a hand to grasp the straps, but his aunt maneuvered the bag out of reach.
"You go ahead and go inside, I'll carry your bag for you," she said.
Elias opened his mouth, preparing to give a reason on why he could carry his own bag, but the stubborn glint in his aunt's eyes caused him to fall silent. With a sigh of defeat, the dark haired brunette made his way to the front door. He dug into the pocket of his jeans and pulled out his aunt's house keys. He pushed the door open and they both shuffled inside. Elias closed the door and locked it before removing his shoes at the front door, not wanting to dirty his aunt's clean floors. The scent of cinnamon flowed throughout the house.
"Your room is upstairs, take a left and you'll find an empty room at the end of the hall. I'll be up in a minute."
With a nod, Elias slowly made his way up the staircase and down the hall to his left. Just as his aunt said there was a room ready for him. Since his aunt was the only one who lived in this house, he assumed this was a room for her guest if they ever need to stay over. He stood in the middle of the room, taking it all in. It's been awhile since he's been in a bedroom. Elias has spent most of his time in hospitals. He's shared rooms with two other people who soon became the closest things to friends he'll ever get.
So the thought of him having his own room, his own bed, his own space in general was a lot to wrap his head around. It was going to take some getting use to that's for sure. He was so use to hearing the steady sound of the heart monitor attached to one of his friends but all he heard in this room was silence. The feeling of loneliness slow washed away his excitment that he previously had. The realization of him having no one but his aunt finally registered inside his head.
Sure he had his parents but they were the ones he sent him away in the first place. They claimed that he needed a slower pace of life. They also had to work longer shifts at work seeing as how they needed the money for his operation. So that meant that they wouldn't be home until midnight and his parents didn't like him staying by himself for that long. Something could happen to him while they were away and in the end they'd feel guilty for not being there to help him like they should have been.
That's why they sent him here but Elias couldn't help and think that maybe his parents were embarrassed of him. Having a son that's been diagnosed with rheumatic fever took his parents by surprised. No one in their family has ever been diagnosed with anything, so as to how Elias received rheumatic fever was a mystery to them. But they were working as hard as they could to pay for his operation. Elias didn't think they could handle losing their only son.
But what happened if the operation didn't work? He'd eventually die. Sure, medicine helped but the only good thing it did was slow down the process. Why let him suffer for so long if this disease, that's hidden deep with in from the judgmental eyes of society, was going to finish him off before he had the chance to even make it into college? These dark thoughts played over and over again in his head. The were broken as a voice sounded behind him.
"I hope it's to your liking, sorry about the bed covers. Dark blue is the only color I have and I'm not really sure if you like that color. I could go down to the store tomorrow and buy you-"
Elias glanced over his shoulder as his aunt set his duffel bag on the floor next to the dresser behind him that occupied the wall to the right. He shook his headz giving his aunt a grateful smile.
"No that's okay aunt Mia, I like the covers. Thank you."
His aunt placed a hand on her hip, shaking her head with a small smile of her own. "Please just call me Mia and I'm glad you like them. Anyway, I'll let you unpack and shower. The bathroom is just across the hall, you should have everything you need but if you need anything, anything at all you let me know okay?"
Elias nodded. Mia continued. "By the time you're finished dinner will be ready and we'll talk about your enrollment to high school."
With that she stepped out of the room, closing it behind her to give him some privacy and leave him with his thoughts.
