I open my eyes slowly at first. Then they jolt open at the sound of the groaning biter at the foot of the tree that I had chose to sleep in the night before. I reach up and grab my bow which was hanging on a branch above me.
"Whack"
The arrow hits right above his left eye. I look around to make sure there are no more and collect my things that are hanging from branches above me. I jump down and reclaim my arrow and set off due north.
The hot summer sun beats down on the back of my neck as I leave the forest and start walking. I notice a few biters here and there but nothing me and my machete can't handle. I keep walking as I come to a highway and notice all the cars lined up going out of the city. Not a single car in the lane going towards town at all.
"Seems like everyone was in a hurry to leave the city" I say under my breath.
I walk towards the city in the near distance and notice a small grocery store off to the side. I decide to go check it out in hopes that there are food and supplies. As I get closer to the store I notice there was a biter staring at a "hiring" sign in the front window. I quietly laugh at the sight and go to take him out without making a sound.
The thing falls to the ground and I go to check the door leading into the store. But I'm disappointed when it doesn't open.
"Damnit, it's locked" I proclaim. I walk to the back of the store and look for another way. But notice that the back door is also locked. "Well this is a good sign. At least no one else has made it in."
I look for a decent sized rock and find one at the edge of the parking lot and walk back to the door, looking around one last time for any biters. I slam the rock against the window of the door, and it just bounces right off. Sending a small pain through my shoulder.
"Ow!" I say loudly. Then I look around making sure nothing heard me. "Nothing can be easy anymore can it?"
I look around and notice that the biter I had taken down earlier had a name tag clipped on his shirt. "Jerry" I read to myself. Then I lean down and check his pockets and surprisingly I find a key. I walk to the door and try the key. It slides in without hassle and I unlock the door and walk in. Making sure to close and lock the door behind me just in case. I find a few candy bars on the front counter and shove them into my back. Then grab a Hershey's bar and tear it open."
"Oh god I haven't had a Hershey's in a while. I hope it's still good." I take a bite and the taste of rich chocolate explodes into my mouth as I devour the bar. Then start looking on the rest of the shelves for more food.
In the back of the store I find some soft drinks and grab a few. Hoping they still taste good. And then grab up all the bottled water I can and shove them into my bag. Then I find the chip isle and start grabbing a few bags. Putting them into my bag also. Then I grab a bag of lays barbecue and rip them open. Then I eat every last crumb that comes out of the bag. And start heading towards the door.
I finally leave the store and make sure to leave the key there for anyone that might pass. If anyone might pass that is. I think back in my mind when I used to visit these types of stores with my parents. I was an only child so I always got whatever I wanted. I was such a spoilt child.
I start walking in the direction of the city. Weaving in and out of the cars that blocked my way. I made sure I had my machete out just in case any biters decided to make an entrance.
I finally make my way into the city and the first thing I notice is the silence. The complete and unbearable silence. Not a sound came from any building. No birds chirping. No insects buzzing. Nothing. It bothered me. And then I noticed a body of a man laying on the ground face down. He had on a cop outfit. So I walked closer to the body and slowly poked at it with the end of the machete. It didn't move so I started checking his belt for the gun.
"Bingo" I find the gun in its holster and check the clip. It was full thankfully. I undone the belt and took the holster and the ammo pouch and attach it to my own belt. And then start walking deeper into the city.
I eventually come to what seems like the center of town. And see a few small dingy shops lining the streets. I search a few of them and find some batteries, two flashlights, and a few smaller items that I thought I might need. Then I sit down on the hood of a car that was parked next to the store I found the flashlights in.
"Shew, all this hard work is making me thirsty" I say to myself. And I reach into the bag and pull out one of the bottles of water that I had gotten from the grocery. I open it and take a few sips and notice the mild taste of plastic. Which would be expected from three year old water. And then slip it back into the bag and start walking again.
I come to a suburban looking part of town and start looking to find a house that looks suitable to stay in for the night.
"That one right there seems like a good fit" I head toward the house. It's a Beige colored house. With three layers of brick separating the siding from the ground. It had a red door that didn't match the rest of the house at all. But I liked it. It was different. And I liked different.
I walk up to the door and reach for the handle I turn it slowly and walk in, scanning the room for biters. There wasn't any so I let my guard down a bit and closed the door. I pushed the couch against it in case any biters show up knocking for fresh meat. And I walk to the back door. I pushed a few smaller cabinets against it and walk back into the living room and take off my bag, laying it on the couch.
I head upstairs and sweep the rooms up there. Checking for anything useful. I didn't find much. A large pocket knife was in one of the drawers in the main bedroom. I slipped it in my pocket and went back downstairs and laid down on the couch. I stared at the tv. Wishing the power was still on. It'd be nice to see a few more episodes of that show I used to watch. Hell I can't even remember the name of it anymore. Which is sad because I used to watch it every night at 8 pm.
I lay out a small dinner for me on one of the plates I found in the kitchen. A bag of chips, a candy bar, and a few nuts that I've had for a while. It isn't much. But it's better than nothing. I chow down and finish the plate of food quickly. Then take a few drinks of water. Then lay back and relax on the couch again.
I doze off for about half an hour when I awake, I start roaming around the house. I find a book shelf with a fairly good amount of books that I recognize. I remembered most of them because my mom helped out at the library and would always drag me along with her, hoping I would start reading. It never worked. I always just roamed around or played on the computers in the lobby.
Then I look down at one of the lower shelves and notice some children's books. They must have had kids. I haven't seen any family pictures on any shelves. Or hanging up on the walls. That's one thing I would have grabbed before I left too. It's the memories that you hold on to that mean the most. And if want to remember it all. Which I don't anymore. I've forgotten most of my childhood memories. I remember bits and pieces, but not too much.
Thump
"What the hell?"
Thump
"Where's that coming from?"
Thump
I slowly look around and start following the thumping sound. I curiously continue to creep through the house. And I find a door in the kitchen that I didn't realize was there when I made my first sweep through the house. I put my ear again the door and lightly knock on the door.
Bam!
"Ah shit!" I jump back in surprise as the door flings open and a biter comes lunging at me. I grab at my waist expecting my machete to be there. "Fuck! I left it in the living room"
The biter drops down on top of me and starts chomping his teeth closer and closer to me. I push my knees against his stomach and throw him over me. I jump up and reach for a collection of kitchen knifes laying on the counter and grab the biggest one I can. Then shove it into the biters head and drop to my knees.
"That was a close one" I say to myself. Then jump up as I hear creaking coming from the door behind me. "What in the world" my mouth drops as I see something creeping slowly up the stairs.
It's a girl.
