I sat on the cold black leather seat and put my glittery purse on my leg. As I put my seat belt on Danyaal opened the door and adjusted his khaki trousers. As he sat he robotically did the same thing, and put his key in. He pursed his lips and turned to look at me, his eyebrows arching when he examined me from head to toe..... which I had to admit made me self conscious. He noticed how I tried covering up and he brushed it past, snickering 'I'm not like them Jamila don't worry'.
He turned on the car and plugged the aux cord onto his phone. As he was trying to find a track, he accidentally pressed on a surah. As we both heard the beginning of the surah, he twitched and changed it almost immediately to a mainstream song. I knew he felt a pang of desperation as he ran his fingers through his hair, sat back and sighed. I started to feel really guilty as I realized what I was doing. I never thought about religion, because I thought of it like culture, both of them hand in hand. After turning a few roads, he started to shift about his seat and tried made conversation.
'So Jamila....um how do you know my cuz Khalil?'.
I replied with a dull tone.
'He's my best friend's man'
' ooooo you mean Nadia?
'Yup'
As he tried to find something else to talk about, he saw a parking spot and in a flash he drove over and parked, as if it was midday and everyone was rushing to find it, and I found it to be unknown territory. He unbuckled his seat belt and decided to ask me:
'What's your views on Khalil?'
'He's a wasteman'
'um ok'
'He cheated on Nadia twice and she took the wasteman back, he knows I'm onto him but persists on the cheating if she doesn't you know.....'
He was slightly shocked and thought of the possibilities 'What? what do you mean by you know.....' His eyebrows and voice pricked up ' you mean like sleeping with him?' I had unlocked my phone and saw the notifications on my phone. Strangely enough I had a few from Nadia and some random guys on Facebook, but I locked my phone and resumed the conversation.
' Yeah but don't act so surprised, they've been sleeping since the month they got together' I knew I had to choose my words wisely, as she was my best friend and I didn't know if he was going to tell Khaliil, since they are cousins ' I told her that she should keep that sleeping thing a secret but everyone knows, I wouldn't be suprised if her older brother or mother found out but she's ruined her chances with guys here, since no guys want her except apparently I took both my index fingers and middle fingers and made a gesture 'Khaliil' Me and my big mouth. I had totally ruined this.
He made a soft smiled and changed his tune of voice. 'Now what about you?'I scoffed at that question, feeling slightly offended but used to that question. ' I don't do this sleeping thing'
'So you have your' And he pointed down his pants as to indicate the virginity. I suddenly realised he doesn't say too many rude things and had a sense of shame. I didn't hesitate and just replied blandly 'Yes' and without a hesitant answer he shot back 'Your lying'. This annoyed me as I didn't understand why a guy would think I would lie about this, so I pulled a sour face. 'Wallahi I haven't' and he replied in such a sarcastic tone of 'MashaAllah' which really annoyed me. I reached ever so slighty to the stereos volume and danyaal decided to put the volume down which was getting me aggravated since I didn't want to talk to someone like him.
I moved around in my seat and asked him ' listen you need to drop me off, it's already late'
As I looked at Danyaal, he put his fingers through his hair and after a minute of his thoughtful expression he asked ' you sure that you don't want to spend more time with me?' I laughed. '
'No thank you just drop me off at my house'
Danyaal stopped the car and looked at me. He took a strand of my hair and put it over my ear. As he saw my nervous expression, he turned and awkwardly said something which I couldn't make out, started the car and drove me home.
As I got out, Danyaal held on my arm and said ' I'll text you later' I nodded my head and watched him drive off, putting my jilbaab back on and entering the house....at 3am.
