I drove in not knowing what exactly to expect, I had my own reservations about going but after much insistence from Nick, and his assurance he would be there, I figured there was no harm to be done in giving it a shot. When I saw he wasn't there and had lied once again so I could embarrass myself I texted him asking where the hell he was at. He responded saying he was catching a ride with Greyson and would be there soon. I sighed, I wasn't the shy type nor did I need him there to “introduce” me to all his car buddies, but he insisted I wait as he didn't want me to get mixed up with the wrong people at the car meet, or as he put it to my parents “a group of fellow car enthusiasts looking to share their hobbies”. When in reality it was a group of people who liked cars and doing dumb shit with cars.
My brother was not a person who was ever on time, and this is what I told myself to justify getting out of my car and not “staying put” as he wanted. As I slipped open my door I was able to take a better look at all the cars, and I glanced down at mine to make sure she was still looking good. Some people had hiking, or art, or other hobbies. Instead I had my car, if I wasn't at school I was probably out doing something that was gonna get me killed in my car. Which is part of the whole reason I came. I was never a social butterfly to speak. I didn't need to be, I was good in school, so I didn't need help, and more importantly I just didn't have time for that type of stuff. Which is why when my brother said he wanted me to come so I could make friends who could monitor my stupid car stunts while he was gone, I hesitantly agreed. A part of me knew it would be nice to have some friends who enjoyed doing what I do. Especially since he would be going to college soon.
I walked around a bit glancing at some cars, nothing I hadn't seen before but they were still nice. I stopped myself glancing at an all pink car with a black hood that was pulling in. It looked nice and when I saw who walked out my surprise doubled, I was expecting to see someone wearing all pink. Instead a girl with short cropped brown hair, and wearing all black with a few hints of white stepped out.
When she saw me she smiled, I walked up,” Damn girl, you did not miss with this one!” She laughed.
“I would hope not with all the blood, sweat, and tears put into it.” I laughed “Have you been here before? I don't remember seeing you.”
“No, this is my first time, my brother actually convinced me to come.” I looked at my phone wondering where the hell he was at. I knew he was late for stuff but normally not this late.
“Oh, who is your brother? I may know him.”
“His name is Nick, he’s the one who thinks his civic is god’s favorite creation.” First I noticed the recognition flash on her face and then the distaste as she grimaced. I wasn't quite sure what went down with her and my brother, or why she didn't like him, but I really didn't care either.
“I’m not sure, I meet a lot of people here.” I knew I liked this girl but man she was bad at lying. Her unease at the topic was obvious, especially when she changed the topic so quickly. “So, which car is yours?”“Mine would be the matte black one over there” She looked at the car then back at me giving me a once over. “ Do I not match her well?” I joked, unlike her I looked like the human version of my car. With long black hair, a curvy figure, and green eyes to match the underglow, I looked like exactly what you would expect.
She laughed,” Actually you look exactly what I would expect.” Knowing I still wanted to look at other cars before Nick got here and ruined my fun I figured I should bring the small talk to an end.
“Well I've gotta get going, but hopefully I'll see you around.”
“Yeah of course.” I stopped when she yelled. “I didn't catch your name.”
“Oh, yeah it’s Ivy, how about you?”
“Iris, cool name!”
“Yeah, same to you!”I waved and then started walking, glancing at more cars as I passed by. It was then that I heard the roar of an engine that I could recognize anywhere as Greyson’s car. Greyson was the one thing in my life that I could never seem to figure out, with his random mood swings especially when it came towards me, and his always brooding self. One second he was all flirty and fun and then something would click and it would be back to moody Greyson. The worst part was that a small part of me knew I liked him. I just refused to admit it. Of course it was hard not to like him, especially when he looked the way he did. Sporting a gorgeous body that seemed effortless to him, even though you knew he had to spend hours in the gym to achieve it, and his little nicknames that you knew meant nothing to him, but to you they meant the world. But after many years of liking him it slowly started to fade into nothing but a blip especially since I knew it would never happen. I was pulled out of my thoughts as I heard them pull in next to my car. I was surprised though when instead of his normally perfect face he has bruising around his eye and a cut on his cheek.
