So the plot is that, one day, Randel moves into a house and finds a small crawl space door. After traveling through it, Randel arrives in Pepperland, a place filled with people and many strange creatures that all have one thing in common.
They all have buttons for eyes.
Ringo meets him first and seems reluctant to let his "friends" find out about the new visitor, but they easily find out and seem delighted.
All seems well as Randel visits Pepperland periodically over the next few weeks, but eventually, Ringo pulls him aside and tells him the dark secrets that everyone else has been keeping from him.
Ringo's words are verified when Randel is approached by Ringo's friends and is offered a chance to stay in Pepperland forever if he does one thing.
Allow buttons to be sewn into his eyes.
After he refuses, the world becomes twisted and dark, all button-eyed creatures turning into the monsters that the buttons twisted them into on the inside, except for Ringo.
With a manhunt underway, Randel must find a way to get him and Ringo out of Pepperland and back home. With the link between Randel's world and Pepperland slowly fading away into nothingness, they only have so much time.
If they can get back to the regular world before the portal vanishes, Ringo will be returned to normal and all will be well.
If they can't, then the both of them will be trapped forever.
