Amelia Jones had called me. I was shocked to hear from her. I never expected her to call me, after what happened more than 18 months ago.
I didn't know what to say to her, so I just listened to whatever she had to say. I can't be all friendly and ask her how she's doing, after all, I barely know anything about her other than her relationship with Jacob.
Once I cut the call, I sat on the couch and closed my eyes. I've been sitting heedlessly for the next hour until Chris came. He came home earlier than usual.
He came over to the couch and sat next to me. He noticed me being listless and asked me, "What happened?"
I looked at his concerned face and hugged him. He waited for me to speak and I spoke after about 5 minutes.
"Amelia Jones called me in the evening," I said.
"She is... Jacob Davies' wife?" asked Chris after remembering who she is.
I nodded, and he asked, "If I'm not wrong, you've spoken to her only once. Why did she call you?"
"When I asked her, she said she wanted to meet me. When I said I can't, she said it's something important, and she needs to see me at the earliest," I said.
"So, what do you want to do?" asked Chris.
I asked him, "What should I do?"
Chris said, "Do what you want to?"
"I don't know what to do. I'm not able to decide," I said, expecting him to help me.
"If you don't know, don't think about it," said Chris casually, and got up to walk to his room.
"Huh?" I was confused.
"Don't think about it and you will know your answer tomorrow," said Chris.
"What do you mean?" I ask, still confused.
"If you sleep well tonight like usual, then you don't care and you don't want to go. But if you're not able to sleep like usual, then you want to go, to know what she has to say. Whichever it is, you'll know your answers when you wake up tomorrow. No matter what you decide, I'll support you. Now stop thinking, and get yourself together," said Chris.
I nodded, and he went inside his room, probably to take a shower.
I thought for a moment, and what he said made sense. If I can sleep peacefully, whatever she has to say, I don't care and it won't affect me in any way. If I can't have a proper sleep, then maybe I do want to know what she has to say, regardless of whether it would affect me in any way or not.
Hours of listlessness, and he solved it with simple logic.
Now that I'm back to normal, I go to drink some water. Just when I was going to sit on the couch, Chris comes out of his room and says, "Come here! Let's cook together."
I smiled when he said that. He wants to take my mind off some meaningless thoughts. Standing in front of him, I ask, "What are we having for dinner?"
Chris smiled and said, "Spaghetti bolognese and shepherd's pie."
My eyes lit up when he said that we're having my favourites for dinner.
I immediately start picking out the vegetables and he picks out the other ingredients. We start our cooking romance. Our parents always say we're perfectly synchronised when it comes to cooking. We need not even speak and we'd do everything perfectly, and that's how our mothers termed our cooking time as 'cooking romance'. We're used to being called that, after all these years.
Within the next 2 hours, our dinner is ready. Chris picked a bottle from the wine cellar and I took out our wine glasses and our plates to the dining table.
We talked a lot about our work schedules. He would have to travel starting from tomorrow to check out the branch companies under him. He won't be free for the next three weeks. I am not particularly busy these days, and I was thinking of attending an event three weeks from now. Then he decided that he would call me every week when he finds time.
We then washed our dishes and watched TV for some time. Then we headed to our rooms and slept.
The next morning, I woke up late and didn't feel good. When I stepped out of my room, I saw Chris ready for work. He looked at me and said, "Seems like you've decided to go. I'll book a flight for you."
I nodded, not liking the idea of going to meet her. I haven't been able to sleep properly, thinking why would a wife want to meet a woman who was in a one-sided love with her husband.
Chris came and stood in front of me, kissed my forehead and said, "Remember the code? Nothing comes before the code. Call me anytime."
I nodded, and he left for work. The code. It is a family code within our two families. Whenever one calls the other, be it for emergency or help or even nothing important, the other would pick up the call, no matter how busy the other is with work. Nothing is more important than each other. This code applies to all 4 of us since my parents are no more.
I took a deep breath and decided to face whatever she has to say to me. I get dressed and I get a notification. It's my flight ticket that Chris booked. I packed a few sets of dress, deciding that I'd stay at London for the next three weeks, attend the event at the end of the third week and then return to Edinburgh the next day.
Once I reached London, I went to my house and dropped off my luggage and texted Amelia Jones as to when and where to meet. She immediately replied.
I called Freya and told her what happened. She asked if I want her to accompany me, for which I said I can manage it.
I reached the location Amelia Jones had sent to me, right on time. When I entered the cafe, I saw her already sitting inside. She seemed to have come earlier. I walked over and said, "Hello!"
"Hello, Kate! Please take a seat," she stood up and said, calling me so friendly as if she had known me for a long time. But what was more unexpected was she had a huge bump. She was pregnant.
I kept staring at her baby bump and her face when I took my seat. I then asked her, "What is so important that you wanted to talk to me in private, Mrs Amelia?"
"I want your help, Kate!" said Amelia Jones.
"What can I possibly help with?" I asked in confusion.
"I have been diagnosed with pre-eclampsia," said Amelia Jones.
