Chapter 3 // "Apologies and Enchiladas"
I make it to the bureau in record time, I scan myself in, waving hi to the security guard. He gives me a questioning look as I pass by him but doesn't say anything. I make it to the training room, so lost in my thoughts that I don't even realize that another person is doing the same across the room. Only when I hear my name do I freeze in my tracks.
"Jade?" a smooth voice asks. The wrapping drops out of my hands. I slowly turn, keeping my eyes glued to the floor.
I draw in a shaky breath while forcing my gaze to meet his.
"What is it, Kaden?" I ask.
"Wow, no 'Walters'?" he questions, trying to lighten the mood. His small smile drops when he sees my face.
"Shit. Have you been crying?" he asks, concern filling his voice. "Why would you think that?" I say, cursing my voice for cracking on the last word. "Um, maybe because your eyes are bloodshot and your voice just cracked," He whispers, afraid to break the silence of the air around us.
"Maybe I have," I start, "but you'd have been able to deduce that even if I didn't tell you. You read too far into my life, and I read too far into yours, I'm sorry. I let my emotions fuel me, and I would like to believe you did too." His eyes harden, any look of concern being pulled back.
"I did." He simply states and then goes back to training.
This boy is infuriating. Here I am, being the bigger person, and all he does is agree with my statement? Who the hell does he think he is?
"So that's all you have to say?" This time it was him who stopped in his tracks. "What else do you want me to say?" He asks, his voice raising.
"Oh, I don't know, maybe 'I'm sorry that I dug too deep into your life. I'm sorry that I brought up painful memories. I'm sorry that I made you cry. I'm sorry that I didn't say sorry'!" I scream at him, rushing to take off the wrap I put on my hand moments ago. I shove it in my bag but before I zip it up a large hand covers mine.
I feel an odd sparking sensation, but I brush it off as my emotions being all over the place.
"Get off of me," I growl, turning around to see Kaden's face inches apart from mine. He moves his hand, but he stays where he is.
After a few moments of silence, I scoff and go back to packing up my stuff. I rush out of the training area for the second time today and run out of the building. I make it to my car, and as I am fumbling with my keys, I feel the presence of someone behind me. A hand reaches out to touch my shoulder, and within seconds, I have the person on their knees with their arm twisted behind them.
"Jade. Let me go please," Kaden's weak voice calls out. I immediately let go and pull any emotion away from my face, slipping an impassive mask on.
Kaden stands up straight while rubbing his arm. "Why are you so violent?" he asks, acting like the past 10 minutes didn't even happen.
"Its in my nature, just like how not saying sorry is in yours," I spit out, still very angry. His face falls at my words.
"I am sorry," he responds, looking at the ground. "Oh really? Then what do you call that stunt you pulled back in the training room?" I say.
"I didn't know what to do!" he exclaims. "Somehow, I highly doubt that." I say, unlocking my car and popping the trunk. I place my duffel bag in the back and press the button to close it.
"Would you just listen?" he says, the tone of his voice making me look up at him. "I didn't say sorry because you did the same thing to me," he says, "you dug into a part of my life I didn't want anyone to know about. The fact that you knew something was up was scary and I thought for a second that it might be petter to piss you off, that way you wouldn't want to talk to me about it. I realize that I was wrong, and I want to tell you, I am sorry, truly sorry."
