This is only one part of my fully functional re-write of Hogwarts and the surrounding Wizarding World, but this took BY FAR the longest and had me pulling my hair out to make it all work - but I did it! I changed some things from canon, of course, and here's how:
The five main core classes are:
Charms
Defence Against the Dark Arts
History of Magic
Potions
Transfiguration
We also consider these classes to be 'semi-core' classes:
Astronomy
Herbology
During their first and second years, students must take all seven core classes three times per week, along with flying lessons twice per week.
During their third and fourth years, students must take Charms, DADA, History, Potions and Transfiguration three times per week, along with Astronomy and Herbology two times per week. Students must also choose two electives during their third year, which will also carry over to their fourth year. Elective classes will be held two times per week Students may choose from:
Arithmancy
Care of Magical Creatures
Divination
Muggle Studies
Study of Ancient Runes
Students should note than Arithmancy and Divination run at the same time, Muggle Studies and Ancient Runes also run at the same time, and it is not possible to choose two classes that run simultaneously. (*cough cough* HERMIONE *cough cough*)
During their fifth year, students will sit their OWL exams in June/July. Fifth year students must take Charms, DADA, History, Potions and Transfiguration three times per week. Students must also choose 2-4 electives which will be taught two times per week. Students may choose from:
Astronomy
Arithmancy
Care of Magical Creatures
Divination
Herbology
Muggle Studies
Study of Ancient Runes
During their sixth and seventh years, students will be studying for their NEWT exams which they will sit in June/July of their seventh year. Students may choose any classes they see fit for their NEWT levels, satisfactory OWL grades permitting. Students will also gain advice from their head of house in a career counselling session at the end of fifth year to help them make smart decisions regarding their NEWT levels. We recommend that students take a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 8 NEWT level classes. There is also the option to take Alchemy this year, if students achieve satisfactory grades (E or above) in Herbology, Potions and Transfiguration. Students may choose from:
Alchemy
Arithmancy
Astronomy
Care of Magical Creatures
Charms
Defence Against the Dark Arts
Divination
Herbology
History of Magic
Muggle Studies
Potions
Study of Ancient Runes
Transfiguration
So there'd the background! Next comes a visual of the entire week's classes for the whole school. It all fits, nothing overlaps, it's all fully workable and makes sense. The caveat is I have had to add a 7th period that runs from 4:30-5:30pm. However barely any classes fall into this period, it's very rare that you'd have a 7th period and it's the only way I could fit everything in whilst keeping the amount of professors as low as I could. (One per subject, per year group up to 6th year and then one who teaches both 6th and 7th years. I will get to this later if you're interested.)Also G, H, R and S stand for the four houses. If something says 'R&S' for example, it's a Ravenclaw and Slytherin class. If it says 'H1' that means it is class 1 of a few Hufflepuff only classes and so on.
