The next day the sun finally came out, already making my day better. The minute I got inside the school, I went to find Max. I literally wanted to kill him, well maybe not going as far enough to kill him, but if he did another thing that bugged me, I’d be inclined to seriously hurt him.
I saw him alone across the cafeteria. Perfect. I could yell at him without anybody interfering. My eyes narrowed as I walked towards him.
Once he saw me, he walked closer, with a smug smirk on his face. We met in the middle of the cafeteria, our faces only inches away from each other.
“Alright, Max,” I said poking his shoulder. It was very muscular and- Snap out of it, Grace! He’s your enemy! “Sit down,” I said, pointing to one of the tables, “First of all, do you enjoy being mean to me? You get me in trouble with the science teacher who now probably hates me because we were passing notes, then you make me fall in front of everyone? What did I ever do to you?”
He was still sitting there smirking. “Look... wait, what’s your name?” I couldn’t believe this. He didn’t even know my name!
“It’s Grace,” I snapped.
“Grace, I’m not being mean to you,” he said, losing the smirk, but still looking smug.
My eyes bulged, “Are you joking?”
“No. If you want me to be mean, I’ll be mean,” he said simply.
My eyes narrowed, “Fine. Be mean. Oh and I saw you on the news... a burglar, eh?”
I saw him shift positions in the seat and look slightly uncomfortable, “Look, I didn’t do it.”
“Oh really? I sort of doubt that, Max,” I said, standing up.
He grabbed my arm and for some reason my face flushed and I couldn’t look him in the eye. His gaze softened, “Grace, I didn’t steal. I’m not that bad.”
I raised my eyebrows and pulled away from his grasp, “Goodbye, Max. See you in chemistry. And by the way, I’m not scared of you.”
I looked behind my shoulder to see Max looking at me, with that stupid smirk on his face. I thought for a second there that he actually had a heart. The way he said my name and then softened his big green eyes and stared right into mine- Grace, stop. He doesn’t have a heart. And now he’s going to make you’re life horrible.
When I reached an empty hallway, I slammed my head against a locker and slid down until I reached the floor. Why did everything have to be so difficult already? It was only my second day!
All of a sudden, someone sat down next to me. I glanced to my left to see Sadie smiling.
“What’s up Grace?” she asked.
“Oh, just finished talking to Max, my favorite person.”
Her eyes widened, “You were talking to him?”
“Yes, and he’s such a jerk. I don’t know why you and all your friends like him so much...”
“First of all, he’s incredibly good looking and I’m sure you agree,” she looked at me as I shook my head, disagreeing, and rolled her eyes in response, “And whenever I see him talking to people, he always seems really nice,” she said, giggling.
“Sadie, you saw what he did to me yesterday in the hallway- but you know what, whatever. You can think what you want and I’ll think what I want, kay?”
“Fine. Deal,” she said. After a few minutes of silence she spoke again, “Lauren, you know the one with the long black hair, she’s having a party Friday night. You in?”
