3rd Person POV

Kai was a boy you describe as "perfect." He was attractive, he was smart, he was fun to be around. And he always gave 100% at everything. Most loved him, all in different ways. And he wore the brightest smile you would ever see.

But not everyone was to happy with him. Many were jealous. They think he gets everything and anything he wants. They think he doesn't deserve his popularity. And they thought that they did.

And so, they lashed out. It started on March 15, 7 months before his birthday exactly. It started as a few pranks. Stealing his books, hiding his clothes after gym, nothing to much. It didn't affect him to much. Everyone decided they would lend their books and clothes to him.

But the day it changed, was when rumors started. There were many rumors. One was that he bullied a kid to suicide 3 years back, one was that he sold his body to the teachers for good grades. There were many. And at first, most people called bullshit.

But soon, slowly, people started believing them. Everyone except his best friend, Hinata. Hinata refused to turn his back on him. He refused to believe the rumors, and even if they were true, he would NEVER leave his side. No matter what.

But as months passed, people were tearing him apart. They would throw things at him in class, and send him death threats. It was getting out of hand.

Hinata did what he could. He's lost count of how many people he's had to slap, and shout at for sending him a letter telling to kill himself, or they would kill him. But it pained him how hard he would try to keep his bright smile on. But no matter how hard he tried, it never looked the same. It wasn't as wide, it wasn't as bright. It was almost pitiful.

Hinata can see him hurting. He can see the bandages on his thighs and wrists. He has experienced him break down multiple times at sleep-overs in the middle of the night. And Hinata cant do anything.

Hinata and Kai had a sleep over on the 14 September. The day before Kai's birthday. They had played a bunch of games that Kai loved. Hinata found a true genuine smile every now and then, and it made him so happy. They had slept at 22:00, due to exhaustion.

Kai had woken up at midnight. He got dressed in his most precious clothing, consisting of presents from Shōyō, and his parents from his birthdays throughout the years. He had brought his diary with him. It was almost filled to the brim on every page except the last. It consisted on how he really felt about school and how he felt about the people around him.

It was a black leather diary with the words "Kai Kotarū" nailed in gold, in the middle of the cover. It was the size of a journal that was small, but couldn't fit in a pocket.

He had brought it with him. He left a note for his best friend to meet him at the beach when he wakes up. He wanted him to be the one to find his diary. Because he knew he would cherish it.

He made it to the wooden dock of the beach. Normally Fishermen fish from this deck. It was pretty high, around 5 meters above the sea.

He took in a deep breath. He took in the salty smell of the ocean, the sound of the wind in his ears and waves crashing. He looked out at the full moon and smiled softly.

He looked in his backpack and found a rope. He had recently learnt how to tie a noose, since he had planned this out a week ago. He wanted to spend the day before he died with his best friend, and crush. He wanted it to be amazing. And he wanted his best friend to have the last memories of him happy and special. But he did regret not kissing him.

He took a deep breath, and put his neck into the noose. And he jumped off the deck. The impact hurt. And he had struggled a bit, until he took his final breath.

"Thank you, Shō.."

Those were the last words that Kai had ever said. And they were never heard by anyone but himself.

——————

Hinata had woken up at roughly 00:46 at night. He woke up and noticed his best friend missing. He panicked until he saw a crumpled up note on his vanity. He picked it up and read it.

"Meet me at the beach when you wake up.

Love, Kai <3"

Hinata had a small smile, and rosy cheeks from the heart. He got up and dressed up in one of Kai's sweaters he took from his bag. He loved wearing oversized clothing from his crush.

He made way to the beach, and was confused when he neither saw or heard Kai anywhere near him. He was gonna turn back, until he saw a shine coming from the deck. He decided to let his curiosity take over him, and he walked over to it.

When he got close, he saw Kai's diary. He was getting a bad feeling, but brushed it off as his mind playing tricks on him.

He picked up the diary and noticed a rope tied around the pilar on the deck. He was confused since fishermen aren't allowed to tie nets, and if they do, they are charged for it.

He walked over to the rope, setting the diary on the floor. He looked down, and saw his best friend hanging from it. He was pale and lifeless.

Hinata's eyes widened and his tears started flowing uncontrollably. He started walking back, and tripped over the diary. He picked the diary up, and pulled it to his chest. He wouldn't let it go. No matter what.

He sat in a ball, holding the diary so tightly his hands turned white. He let out broken sobs and screams. It felt like an eternity until someone came and and called the police.

He swore from that day, that he would be as perfect as he could for his best friend. And he will move on for him, no matter how hard it hurt.

He hasn't opened the diary. And he wont until he's accepted the fact hes gone, and can admit it without crying.
