Anguished eyes

The next couple of weeks race by in a blur. Anytime I'm not in school, or sleeping, I'm with the pack. I've never been part of a pack obviously, so I'm discovering the whole 'We all can hear every thought in your head' thing is pretty tedious. Every time I think about Paul and how husky his voice sounded the other day, or the way his arms barely fit into his shirts, I'm met with constant teasing from the boys. Though Paul just retaliates with his thoughts about me and then the boys are on him.  I do my absolute best not to think about Vancouver, but every once in a while a blip will flash through my mind without my consent. A glimpse of white and grey fur exploding in a car. A flash of blood. But I always cut it off, and thankfully no one pushes me on it.

I get lots of practice working with the pack right off the bat, because a certain ginger bloodsucker keeps testing our defenses. It seems every time I go out in my wolf form, she's right there and we almost get her.

Right now we're all out trying to catch up to her, but it seems Bella Swan has taken it upon herself to notify Chief Swan of the huge wolves traipsing around the forest. It gets a hell of a lot more difficult to hunt a vampire when there's townspeople out trying to hunt you at the same time.

I catch a whiff of her scent coming from just south of me, and I take off in that direction. But when I finally get her in my sights, I feel my heart stop as I see she has my Uncle Harry held above her head. I put everything I have into racing towards them, but Jacob beats me to it, running head on into the vampire and knocking my uncle out of her grasp. Jacob takes off trying to get hold of her, but I can see something is wrong as my Uncle clutches his chest on the ground. My paws turn into feet just as I reach him, not even thinking about clothes. I just need to get to him.

"Uncle Harry!! Tell me what's going on?! Hey open your eyes!" I scream frantically. But he's not responding to me... or breathing. I don't know how long I've been pumping on his chest when I feel a hand on my shoulder.

"Luce..." Embry's voice whispers behind me but I can't bring myself to stop trying to bring this man back. I can barely see him anymore through the tears in my eyes. A part of my brain knows that I'm mumbling to myself that this can't be happening.

"Lucy... He's gone. Let him rest." And I'm being pulled back into warm arms. Somewhere in the midst of my sobbing, Embry pulls a shirt over my head. He pulls me into his arms and walks all the way back to my house with me sobbing into his chest. It seems that someone had already broken the horrible news to the rest of my family, because when Embry sets me down on the couch, Aunt Sue is there next to me with a blank look on her face, like she hasn't quite grasped yet that her husband is gone. I reach out and pull her into my arms, and that's when she seems to collapse in on herself and let everything out. At the sound of Sue's wailing, I start to hear a sort of jittering. I look up and see that Leah is vibrating at an inhuman rate and clenching her eyes.

"Leah?" At the sound of my raspy voice, everyone turns to look at her. "Leah, you need to come with me outside." Leah's head snaps up to look at me, anguish in her eyes, and she beelines it for the front yard. All that can be heard from inside is the sound of a shriek morphing into a howl.
