Flames, falling buildings, riots and murder. After a while it became clear, the facade of safety and competence fell down. Rusty for the first time in his life saw how cruel people can be just for personal gain. Walking through the smoke and screams of the people that surrounded him he noticed that his limbs where constanly changing shape. His fur wasn't yellow anymore, colors stopped being recognizable... but did they ever matter? Then it stopped, suddenly everything became nothing and vice versa.
Rusty woke up, teachers voice echoed through the large classroom. Still scared about the dream he had, he tried to regain his composure. Rust was lucky that he sat in the back, the teacher usually didn't check there so you could get away with anything, as long as you weren't too loud of course. He looked at the clock hanging above the front door, the lesson ends in a couple of minutes. For a normal student that would be great news, but Rusty didn't feel that way. He hated those overcrowded halls, and the noise that accompanied it didn't make it better. The bell rang, and everybody went out of the classroom, Rusty followed shortly after.
As he was walking to a vending machine to buy some food, he saw two very familiar faces. It was none other than Jack and Zill. The former being a brown jackal with scruffy ears and black irises. Jack was pretty average when it came to looks, but he was still special, more special than almost anyone else in the school. And that was because he was cursed. His curse had something to do with bad luck and immortality, which made him dangerous to be around, since everything was trying to hurt him, be it falling trees, lamps or lockers. His buddy Zill was a somewhat tall orange creature with purple limbs and a snake for his tail. Nobody knew what species he belonged into, and Zill didn't seem to care that much.
As Rusty looked at the two, memories started flooding in. Normally he would go up to Jack and make fun of him for whatever reason first came to mind. Using him as a source of unleashing his pent up anger. As much as it seemed like Rust was proud of himself after bullying Jack, the opposite was true. He hated himself for doing it, he kinda liked Jack and if it wasn't for him being known as a school bully he would probably try to repair their relationship. Still, it seemed to late for that, Jack would never accept him after what he did. Rusty wished he could go back in time and fix everything. Maybe he wouldn't feel so alone, knowing that there's nobody out there that would want to hear him out. After a while his anger vanished and was replaced by indifference. Why should he bother, It's not like he can change anything.
-Hi Ruben, how's it going?- A familiar voice stopped Rusty's train of thought.
-Huh?- To the right of him stood a red deer, wearing an orange shirt and brown pants.- Oh I'm fine.- Added Rust after his brief moment of confusion.
-Are you sure? You usually get angry when I call you by your real name.- Said the deer in a worried tone. It wasn't often that he saw Rusty in a sad emotional state.
-Yeah, I'm just not in the mood right now Autumn.- Said Rusty with his head looking down. He didn't want Autumn to see him like that.
-Oh, well then, if you want to talk about it just message me. Okay?- The deer could read the room, and it didn't seem like Rusty was too eager to talk right now.
-Sure thing, thanks.- Rust replied, moments later the school bell rang and they both went on their way.
Lessons came to an end. Rusty went to the exit hoping the weather wouldn't be horrible. To his surprise it wasn't too bad, the clouds were gloomy and there was no sunshine but at least it wasn't raining, yet. After a while of walking he left the central district. Walking through the streets he saw the same repetitive scenery. Grey hollow flats, everything seemed so lifeless here in the outskirts, almost in contrast to the colorful and lively city centre, the only part of Safe Haven that the government liked to show.
As he was approaching his home he saw a police car stop by the nearby parking space. The presence of police officers wasn't a surprise in the dog district, since it was so close to the vampire district over-policing was common in these parts. What was more surprising though is the police car stopping, it never foretold anything good.
Just as Rusty was crossing the street he heard two voices coming from the corner behind him.
-What are we gonna do when they come for us?- Said the first voice behind Rusty's back.
-God damn it, that gang of hatin' pigs.- The second one added.
-What have they ever did for us?- The conversation between them started getting more tense.
-Ain't never done shit.- The second voice whispered in order to not get the attention of the police.
Rusty and two spectators behind him looked at the stopped police car with anticipation. After a while two cops got out the car, and went towards a vampire that was walking alone on their side of the street.
-Hey stop!- Said the first cop with a baton in his hand.
-Put your hands against the wall.- Said the second cop. After the vampire did what he was told to do they started searching him.
-What, why am I getting searched, what did I do?!- The vampire said, his hands shaking as he leaned them on the wall.
The police stayed silent, they didn't need a reason. Rusty was watching the scene from afar, no matter how much he wanted to bring a stop to what was happening, he couldn't. It wouldn't change anything, if something it would make the matters far worse. He'd probably get jailed with the vampire, and God forbid if the cops were in a bad mood. Planting drugs on innocent suspects was something that they did pretty often. After a while the two voices behind Rusty started talking.
-Fuckin' bitches, all they ever do is trip. Let's get out of here.- Said the first voice.
-Yeah, let's go. There's nothing we can do.- After the reply quick footsteps could be heard.
Rusty was left alone watching the police apprehend that poor vampire.
-Hey, what am I being arrested for!?- Shouted the vampire while he was getting searched.
-You looked at us wrong, we saw you cutting off your eye contact. You need to understand, it looked sketchy, you might be having some drugs on you.- Said the first cop, not expressing any emotions on his face.
-What? Is looking wrong somewhere in the law? I didn't do anything, come on.- With his head down and his voice cracking it semmed like he lost all of his hope. There was no way he could win.
-Hey, put him in the car. He's going with us.- The first cop said. The officer that has been searching the vampire grabbed his arm and cuffed him. After a while they put him into the car.
Rusty clenched his fist. He was angry that he couldn't do anything. Incidents like that were pretty common in the area he lived in. He even saw a couple of them, and everytime the inability to do anything destroyed him emotionally. Shame and anger were always present, and if he felt that way only from spectating, he couldn't even imagine what that vampire was going through.
Still, there is nothing he can do now. The police car drove off a couple of minutes ago. To his misfortune it started raining just as he was a couple of streets away from his home. After a while he got into his apartment. With his fur all wet he went to the bathroom to dry himself. Searching his shelves to get his hair dryer he heard a notification ring on his phone. He got his cellphone and looked at the screen. It was a message from Autumn.
-Hey, you want to meet up tomorrow?
