The day was hot and the skies were clear. Birds and various creatures of the land and skies sang sweet songs that resonated throughout the entire Capital. Mom brought sister and I to the park today. There were so many different trees; some brown and green, some brown and blue, some with big canopies and some with branches that grew downwards into the ground. Some people called the fana of the Nova Realm strange, but since I was born here, I just loved them for how they were. Even the six legged rodents that lived in the trees brought a smile to my face.
"Anthony!" Called my sister, pulling my attention from the park's wildlife. I turned to face her quickly, making the short pony tail that I was growing away as I turned my head.
"What?" I called back to her, "I was watching the animal, Marie!"
"Mom said it's time for lunch!" She giggled as she pointed behind her, where mama was pulling food out of a picnic basket, laying it out on a blanket.
"Yum!" I said with a laugh, running after my sister, "last one there is Gloober sludge!" I playfully shoved my sister so I would have a headstart.
"No fair!" She grumbled as she ran after me. We shoved each other lightly as we ran, laughing the whole way until I claimed victory at the picnic blanket.
"I win, I win!" I jumped excitedly, oblivious to my sister as she tumbled into me and we both wound up sprawled out on the ground at the edge of the blanket, giggling like the kids we were. Mom was giggling, too.
"Well it's no surprise" mom said, "ten year olds are usually faster than Seven year olds."
"I'm almost eight now!" Said Marie, almost like she was offended.
"Almost doesn't count," mom replied, brushing back her black hair, "now come on and eat. Maybe we can make it home before daddy gets home."
"Ok!" My sister and I replied in unison. Mom brought sandwiches and chips for lunch, along with a small slice of lemon cake for each of us. I was just about to take a bite of my lemon cake when a loud rumbling filled the sky and the ground started to shake, followed by my mom's gasp.
"A Rift..." she whispered.
The tip of my fork suddenly became of fuzzy, like when our TV was glitching before dad baught a new one. The fuz traveled up my arm, sending a shiver down my spine but otherwise not hurting at all. Then my vision flashed red, then black and white, before there was a loud boom and the rushing of wind.
Mom threw up her hands and a blue bubble surrounded the three of us. Mom always said our home gave her this ability to protect her family, and now I was very glad she had it.
Safe from the raging wind and loud noises outside, my sister and I hid behind mom, hanging on tightly to her shirt while she tried calming us.
The Rifts were scary. They weren't supposed to happen very often, but they've been happening more lately. They always caused changes when they open and break things. The scariest parts about the rifts were the things that came out of them.
There was a loud, low kind of shriek that shook the ground once more. I covered my ears, but it did little to help the pain in my head or to loosen my sister's grip on my arm. The shriek lasted for minutes, and when it stopped, I looked around to see where it came from, eventually looking up in the sky.
Over the shoulder of my mom, I saw massive tear in the sky, as if some creature had ripped away the beautiful blue atmosphere, leading to a dark red and black space. The air was being pushed out from the rift, and the sky itself started to turn red and dark purple, starting from the rift and creeping outwards. As the sky continued to darken, it seemed like a shadow was slowly covering the entire capital. I grabbed my sister and held her close, holding her head against my chest so she couldn't see the rift.
