Chapter 3 ****************************
I helped Kaitlin out of the car. She seriously did look terrible. There was blood all over her. All her hair was stuck to her dried up blood on her face. I tried wiping it off, but again, another strange force pulled me back. Weird. But, I didn't have time to worry about that now, the more important thing right now was Kaitlin.
We walked into the hospital, and right when the receptionist saw Kaitlin, we were sent to a medical room.
We told the doctor what had happened. He thought about it for awhile, and then came to the conclusion that we were seeing things and going paranoid. He also tried cleaning Kaitlin's face, but the force wouldn't let him. He ignored it, and told us to get some rest.
We left the room disappointed, and headed home. I phoned Kaitlin's parents, but only told them that Kaitlin had fallen, and we were just cleaning her up. I didn't want them to think that we were paranoid as well. I was going to wait and see what they would put up on the local news. Probably something like "Pipe broken, causing explosion at school. Many dead" Now that I was thinking about it, it seemed more realistic than... than what? I don't even know what had happened. There was my vision. There was Kaitlin's feeling. And there was an explosion. That's all I knew.
I looked up and screamed. There was a car pulling straight ahead of me. I slammed down hard on the steering wheel, making Kaitlin jump at the sound. I swerved out of the way, almost hitting another couple of cars. I sighed in relief as I pulled safely into the parking lot of Starbucks. This time, Kaitlin did say something.
"Maybe you should have paid more attention to the traffic instead of playing your iPod so loud Ashley..."
Playing my iPod wasn't actually the reason I wasn't paying attention. I was only playing my iPod to break the awkward silence between the two of us. I was actually just thinking about the past two crazy days. But Kaitlin was right. Ever since I got this Lexus RX11 car for a late 16th birthday present just before school started, I have been using the USB port to play my iPod every time I went driving.
I had gotten- "Hey Ashley, do you think you could get me a coffee at Starbucks?"
"Oh, yeah sure." I replied. Once again, Kaitlin had pulled me out of my thoughts...
Kaitlin may be the talkative one, but I was definatly the "thinkative" one. Didn't know if that was a word, but anyway. I think Kaitlin was playing the "thinkative" one as well right now. She wasn't saying a lot. She was still terrified from the explosion. So was I. But I'm sure once she gets back to normal, she'll be the talkative one again.
This time I didn't need Kaitlin to pull me out of my thoughts. I pulled my purse out of the back seat, and I walked into Starbucks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I got my keys, and almost opened the front door of the house, but then I realized that my parents would see Kaitlin. Instead, I went back downstairs and opened the basement door to my room. We threw our coffee cups in the garbage, and lay down on the bed. I think we were both tired after that long and terrifying day. Making sure I wouldn't fall asleep, I sat back up and asked Kaitlin if she could try and clean her face up. Once she saw herself in the mirror, she agreed. She was glad she didn't have to come in with me to Starbucks.
We got a wet cloth, and when she tried wiping her face off, it worked. Ok, that was weird. Both the doctor and I couldn't wash her face off because of that force; but she could. Well, that was good. We would have had a hard time explaining to her parents about what happened to her. She looked far worse than she would if she had just fallen.
Realizing there was blood all over her new skinny jeans and her new $90 sweater, she shrieked. I promised her we'd get it off in the wash, but I wasn't so sure. And, when I tried taking her clothes, that same force stopped me. Ok, this was really starting to bug me. Instead she went over with her clothes and turned the washing machine on. To get the last of the dried up blood, she went back to the bathroom and had a shower.
I walked back over to my bed, and once again thought about these past two days. I just couldn't get myself to believe it... All this stuff was really scaring me. I started thinking about all those welcoming faces who greeted me when I came the first day. Everybody crowding around, wanting to be my friend. Everyone who cared about me. Everyone who was dead.
