7:30a.m. Entrance to Kalāheo High School
-------------------
"Hey, guys!" I raced over to where my friends were standing, at the entrance to the big school that stood before us, sort of threatening.
"What's up, Mahina?" Llyra asked, hugging me. It was the first day of High School, and all of us were very excited and scared and nervous and all the emotions three freshmen could have.
I responded, giggling, "the sky, of course!"
Hilo slugged my arm, laughing. "Mahina, stop it! She was asking how you where doing not how the sky was doing!" Hilo always acted like he was super intelligent and serious, but I could always make him laugh.
Lyra stopped hugging me and put her hands on my shoulders. "Seriously, how have you been?"
"I've been pretty good! Hey, guys, guess what?" I said, barely being able to contain my excitement.
"What?" Llyra and Hilo both said at the same time, then burst into giggles.
"Okay okay, calm down, CALM DOWN!" I scolded, not even being able to calm down myself. After all, it had been such a long time since I had last seen them! After a while they finally relaxed. "So, as you know from all my letters and texts, that I went to the Bahamas, right?" They nodded. "Well you will never guess what I got!"
They both rolled in with guesses, obviously trying to guess the very thing that was unguessable. "A piece of grass!" "Some sand!" "An ant!" "Ooo, ooo, a turtle!" "Coconuts!" "You bought the entire island!" I glared at Hilo, who said that. I didn't like the fact that I was considered to be more wealthy than a lot of residents on Hawaii, and Hilo knew that I got offended when he brought that up.
I didn't really want the guesses to continue after what Hilo said. "No no no! You're all wrong! I told you you'll never guess! Anyways, I got a hermit crab! And his name is...drumroll please..."
Llyra and Hilo both drummed their legs, giving the illusion of a drumroll. "Jerry! Isn't it perfect?"
"Oh my god, Mahina, that is like, the best name ever to give to a little creature like that!" Llyra chimed, smiling like it was the best day ever.
Before we could say much else, a loud ringing sound went off from the direction of the school. We all spun towards it, the sound clicking in our heads.
Hilo said it first, "Well obviously that means it is time to go to school I guess. What's all of you guys's first hour? I have Algebra, boo."
Llyra gasped, and jumped up and down. "Oh my god, me too! Room 102, right? With Mr. Sanders?*"
"Yup. I don't know wether to look forwards to it, or to be scared." While Hilo was the smartest of all of us, none of us are good at math of any sort.
"Oh that's sad. I have Civics first hour." I sighed. Usually it'd be great if one of my friends were in my classes with me, because they help me and it's just nice, but it's fine if they can't. I really wished Hilo had civics with me though, he's super good at it.
"Dangit! Well, at least we all signed up for Art, right? Thank goodness that's at the end of the day, too. That way we can all help each other with our homework!" Llyra never really stopped chatting. I suppose that was nice. But as much as she talked, she was also an extremely good listener.
I checked my watch. 7:41a.m. "Guys, we should head out. Don't want to be late on our first day!"
"Right, thanks Mahina! See you!" With that, Hilo and Llyra both skipped off to their class, leaving me to fend for myself.
