*A/N- this is after Hogwarts they are both 23 years old working at jobs in the ministry.
This is written based off of the song- "Hollywood" by Lewis Capaldi
"Hermione, you know I need to take this job," Draco said hoping she would understand.
Draco was just offered to work at the ministry of magic in the United States for better money and better opportunity of promotion. He needed to go career wise, but he didn't want to leave Hermione. He knew he would have to choose between his job or his girlfriend of three years. Well "if you love them, let them go" isn't that the expression. He made up his mind and if she didn't support him well then what kind of relationship would that be.
"I know you need to take the job, I wouldn't expect anything less from you." Hermione said with mixed emotions of happiness, sadness, and being proud of her successful boyfriend. "You know I have to stay here, right?"
"I know, I already asked if you could come with me."
"You did?"
"Of course I did, but they said your department needs you to stay here. You had to be good at your job, really?" he tried to say jokingly but his heart wasn't in it.
"Well you had to be good at yours," stated Hermione with a small smile. "How long until you have to leave?" Her voice suddenly growing quiet, trying to mask her sadness.
"A month."
"That's not very long."
"I know. It's better than nothing though."
"True."
They avoided the conversation they needed to have with each other for as long as possible. They spent every second together, trying to memorize everything about each other as if it was the last time they would ever talk. Essentially it might be, nobody knew how long Draco was gonna be in the United States for. He could be there for the rest of his life or come back in a couple years. It all depended on how well he did over there. Hermione didn't want him to go, but she would never hold him back in anything he wanted to do. Draco wasn't going to drag her along though, they both knew long distance would kill them. They were procrastinating as long as they could to hold off the inevitable. Until it came.
It was now the day before he had to leave
"Hermione can we talk?" Draco was regretting this already. She knew what was coming and she didn't want to hear it either, but he knew he had to let her go. She deserved to be with someone who was going to be around.
"I'm leaving tomorrow, Hermione and the last thing I want to do is end this with you, but I'm also not going to keep you waiting. You don't deserve that."
"We can do long distance," Hermione whispered hopefully. She knew in her heart that things wouldn't work out like that.
"You know how much I would love to do that, but I don't know when I'm coming back," he said with utmost pain in his voice. If it was hurting him this much to leave why was he doing it, he thought.
"If you come back promise me something," she finally let out, "Promise me you'll look for me if you come back.
"But what if you find someone else?"
"I'm not going to find someone else."
"How do you know that? I don't want you waiting for me," Draco spoke quietly. He secretly wanted her to wait for him, but he would never tell her that.
"I'm not going to wait for you. I am going to live my life, but there isn't a doubt in my mind that one day it is going to be me and you in the end," she said that with the utmost certainty.
"You really believe that?"
"I believe that we are the right person, wrong time type of love. So, in the end it's gonna be me and you."
"I'm holding you to it, Hermione."
"You better, but you never promised me."
"I promise you, if I come back, you are the first person I am seeing."
"Okay, before you leave there are two things I want you to do for me please," Hermione said. This was by far going to be the hardest thing she was ever going to say.
"Anything," and he meant it.
"I need you to officially break up with me. I need you to say the words and I need to hear it otherwise I am not going to fully believe this is happening. The second thing is, I don't want you to write to me. It will be too hard to hear from you and not be able to see you." The tears were finally flowing down her face. She was trying not to cry this entire time, but a silent sob raked through her body and she knew she couldn't keep it in anymore.
"Hermione." Seeing her cry was too much. He wasn't going to cry, he couldn't but it did hurt him to see her like that. "I can't say it, that will make this too real."
"Please," she looked up at him, begging him to say the words to make it official.
"Okay, fine, but you need to promise me one thing too."
"If I come back, the first time I see you promise me you will say 'Screw you for being good at your job'" He said with a small smile.
"I promise, now let's get this over with." Her voice broke as she said it.
"Hermione, I can't do this anymore. We need to break up," as Draco said this, his voice cracked and one single tiny tear fell down his face. He wiped it away quickly, but not before she saw it. That tiny tear was the one thing that gave her hope that in the end he was always going to care about her.
"Screw you." She said it jokingly with a small smile on her face. Draco knew she didn't mean it and he gave a small chuckle back. With that, she hugged him one last time, put her hand on the doorknob, looked back at him, walked out the door, and that was the last time she ever saw his face.
