The Awakening

Running through the woods, low to the ground and moving at a fast pace. Dodging each tree as I approach it. I don't know what it is, but something is after me. I can hear someone running behind me, it isn't close. Hearing the twigs snapping under neath it's feet. My heart is going a mile a second in my chest, the adrenaline is coursing through every inch of my veins. Looking behind me I see a dark shadow following me. As I look back in front of me I run into a tree.

Sitting up in my bed I realize that it is the same dream that I have had for the last two months. I have no idea what it means, but my heart is always racing when I wake up. A shiver runs down my spine as I begin to stretch. Something catches my sense of smell, breakfast. For the last few years my senses have seemed to go on red alert, but smelling breakfast makes me forget about my dream. As I get up and walk to my dresser i slip on a black t-shirt and some blue jeans. Leaving my room and trotting down the stairs I walk into the kitchen.

"Hey mom, it smells great what are we having besides bacon?" I ask as I approach the counter and lean onto it haphazardly.

" Well I was thinking about bacon and pancakes. Does that sound good? Are you excited for your birthday tomorrow?" My mother asks as she puts the food onto a plate for me. I take the plate and walk to the table. Sitting down I start to dig into the food, taking a small break to answer her.

" It's just another birthday mom, nothing special about it. The food is great by the way mom." Continuing to eat after I finish speaking. Looking up I see my mother shaking her head gently.

"The eighteenth birthday is a big deal in our family, a lot of changes and new beginnings. You should be excited for it." She says walking over to me and placing her hand on my shoulder and giving it a light squeeze. I shrug off her and and laugh softly as I finish my breakfast.

"I need to get ready for school, and I had that weird dream about the woods again. I don't particularly enjoy it. I have no idea what it means or why I have this dream." Standing up and speaking as I start walking towards the laundry room to get some socks and my shoes. After putting on my socks and shoes I hurry towards the front door to grab my backpack and my keys.

"Be safe driving to school and don't do anything stupid." She says walking to wash the dishes. I walk out the door and head to my old beat up '99 Honda Accord. Getting into my car and starting the engine before backing out of my drive way. The drive to school is boring and I usually space out as I am driving there. Before I know it, I am parked in the parking lot of the school. Leaning my head against my steering wheel, and taking a few breathes before I go into school. I live in Middletown, Ohio, and go to the Middletown High School. I don't really fit into any clique, I am a bit of an outsider. Even though I am friends with some kids from all of the cliques. Getting out of my car I start walking to the front door and see a few faces that are familiar but I don't pay them much attention. I am not what you call social really, I kind of stick to myself and only speak to someone if they speak to me.

My first class is German, my parents didn't agree with the fact that I chose to learn German instead of Spanish. As they have put it no one in the states speaks German, but plenty of people speak Spanish so I am wasting my time learning a language that I will never use in my life. To that I have always told them that German fascinates me more than any other language. Sitting down in my chair I wait for my teacher to start class. As Mrs. Green starts class I begin to zone out again. All of my classes are relatively easy for me so I don't pay much attention to them, but I somehow still manage to make A's and B's in school, I always have. Before I knew it it was lunch and I sat down with my friends and my best friend Alyss Mizell. I have known her for almost all of my life, she moved to town when I was around five years old. We kind of just clicked in school and stuck together.

While I am sitting at the table I begin to think back on my dream from last night, trying to figure out what the shadow was that was chasing me. Zoned out and staring into space, I faintly hear my name being called.

"Argent, Argent are you going to just stare into space all of lunch or are you going to talk to us?" Alyss asked in a joking voice, it snapped me back to my senses.

"Sorry Alyss, I had that same dream again but this time I saw a shadowed figure chasing me. I was attempting to figure out what it was that it was. I am back to the land of the living though, sorry." I speak and then laugh softly. Looking at Alyss she had Long black hair, wearing a MMA shirt from where she trained at when she was younger, a pair of green cargo pants, and black / white converse shoes.

"You are fine, just wanted to talk was all I haven't seen you since German this morning." Alyss said smiling softly. Our conversation continued about my dream for a little while, before she brought up my birthday.

"So what are you going to do for your birthday this year? Same old, same old?" Alyss asked curiously.

"I'm not entirely sure to be honest, you know I have never really been one to celebrate birthdays. It seems like a waste of my time and everyone else's that is involved." I say as i tap my fingers against the table.

"You know it's never a waste of time for me, you are my best friend I actually enjoy hanging out on your birthdays with you. So if you come up with something to do just let me know and I will be there." She said and went back to eating her food.

"Well, I might have a bonfire if my mom will let me. There is no telling if it will happen though, so don't get your hopes to high." Speaking off the top of my head for an idea so that Alyss wouldn't feel like I didn't want to spend time with her.

Slowly as time passes the rest of my friends slowly migrate towards the gym for the rest of lunch to hang out and relax with their other friends or by themselves. Soon it was just Alyss and myself left at the table. Our conversation became meaningless and drawn out as the bell rang signaling our lunch was over. We both got up and headed to science. Our teacher Mr. Vinson was an amazing teacher, he went above and beyond to make the students feel included in all of his classes. Whether it be projects that were hands on, or presentations that allowed us to help.
