Hey guys, and welcome to my OC redesign shop! Here I'm going to be fixing my bland, unrealistic old OCs and hopefully transform them into much better characters. I'll start by recognizing the problems with an old OC, explaining the problems, and then fixing the problems. Then I'll make any other necessary changes or additions to the character. Let's start with the worst of the bunch... Skyla. Oh, Skyla. She was a Mary Sue of the "Jerk Sue" variety, which in my opinion is the most annoying type of Mary Sue. (For those of you who don't know, a "Jerk Sue" is a mean character that is still portrayed as a great person and gets away with being a bullying jerk. The other characters tolerate the antics of the Jerk Sue- which can range from petty to sociopathic- allowing him/her to walk all over them.) And that's just the tip of the iceberg of the many things wrong with Skyla.
Problem Trait #1: Skyla is an Admin who still has all of her powers. This makes her very Sue-ish and overpowered. I really cannot stand Admin OCs, they scream "look at me, I'm special."
Fix for Problem Trait #1: It would make a lot more sense story-wise if Skyla was just a regular human, because Admins are extremely rare and an Admin who doesn't have some sort of restraint on his/her powers (only has a few powers left, gets tired when he/she uses his/her powers, has something he/she is weakened to that isn't too hard to access, etc.) would not really be challenged in any way, which would be boring for the readers. For example, in the wrong hands, Superman can be written badly... but in the right hands, he can be written very well. Superman is only weakened by Kryptonite... but this works in Superman stories where it seems like everyone and their mother could get access to Kryptonite and/or most of the villains have a power that can successfully counter Superman in some way (like Livewire, who Superman has to use his wits to defeat because she can turn into pure electricity). On the other hand, if Kryptonite is very hard to come by and most of the villains don't have a power that can successfully counter Superman in some way, Superman could easily pummel anyone with no contest, which is boring. There are only three Admins, so having a fourth Admin all of a sudden seems shoehorned and unlikely.
Problem Trait #2: Skyla's bright red hair and bright blue eyes clash with each other and stand out too much.
Fix for Problem Trait #2: Skyla is a human now, so I have to give her a natural hair color. I think light blond hair in a pixie cut with a small ponytail would look nice and suit her personality. As for the eye color, I'll give her muted grayish-blue eyes, so they don't clash with her hair or draw attention. I also really want to give her freckles on her nose, because they would really tie the whole design together and add some cuteness.
Problem Trait #3: Her outfit- black converse, a white v-neck t-shirt, and dark blue jeans- looks way too generic and is a palette swap of Romeo's outfit. This is bad because palette swaps are the hallmark of a lazy design, and generic outfits don't really tell you much about a character's personality.
Fix for Problem Trait #3: Yay, outfit redesign time! I have a lot of fun dressing up my characters like little paper dolls. I'll just throw her old outfit in the trash can and start from scratch, because this girl doesn't just need an update. She needs a complete makeover. Get in Skyla, we're going shopping. I decided to go for a grunge look and give her black leggings, black combat boots, and a dark purple hoodie with white pull strings. Her old outfit didn't really tell you anything, but her new outfit gives more of a feel for her tough cookie personality.
Problem Trait #4: Skyla gets away with literally anything. For reference, I've provided you with a list of all of the things she got away with. Skyla sneaks around Jesse's office and learns a lot of very private things about Jesse, constantly says extremely rude or even flat-out mean things to people, hits Petra, threatens to kill someone to show how dangerous she can be, constantly bosses people around, nearly kills the Blaze Rods, bribes a security guy to get a large pet through security, beats Jack over the head with a suitcase, and temporarily locked Aiden in the Sunshine Institute. Told you the sheer amount of crud she got away with was impressive. The worst punishment she ever got was a weak scolding. There's no way she'd get away with her behavior in real life and she's so short tempered that it makes her an unsympathetic brat, so something has to be done to fix this.
