One thought prevailed in James' mind as he stepped into the carriage: the war was over, he could see her at last. He plopped in the back seat, tipped his hat up, and squinted through the window- at the azure skies overhead streaked with cirrus, at the mountains that surrounded the wheeled vehicle, blooming brightly in a colourful foliage. The carriage started to move.

In a lively tone only sheer ecstasy could provoke James spoke to his coachman: "Do you hear the roses sing, Samuel? That sing-song morning tune! They say my dearest Blanche awaits for me!"

"Pray not to act too enthusiastic, sire," old Samuel replied, his voice a monotonous buzz of a lonely bee. "You act as if you are only three and twenty."

"Ah! Do I look a decade younger when I gush with love?" He lightly poked the coachman at the side with his cane; and giggled.

Samuel snorted, "May I add: a young woman who is only three and twenty receiving flowers from a cavalier for the first time?"

"You amuse me, Samuel!"

"I wish I could say the same, sire."

"Well, I cannot help it! I shall see my lady in a day! After five years! She must be fairer than ever!"

"I hate to be such a pessimist, sire, so pray pardon me: but a day can stretch as a year as it only takes a second to grant a swift slash through your jugular."

"Samuel, I've been in the front, have entertained a bullet in my shoulder, a chipped blade through my back; the odds have always been in my favour." With the beam that would not leave his lips James leaned back and rested his hat on his face. "After a brief meeting with Colonel Sterling in St. Peter," James said, voice muffled in leather, "I shall see her at last, Samuel! My Blanche.... my darling, dear Blanche."

"Whatever you fancy, sire." Samuel sighed sadly as he whipped the horse to march faster. "Whatever you fancy..."
