He was a boy of rainclouds. She was a girl of sunshine.
He could feel every raindrop land outside his window as he stared intensely through it. After everything that happened, he had nothing better to do. She had taken a well-earned sabbatical once she returned to her family. But within months, she was back to work at her news station. Akira Tsuchiya didn't go out much. If the weather was dry, he would wander out at night for a little jog, but that was it, really. Marin Mizuta too didn't go out much. Once her work shift was over, she barely had some free time before retiring to bed.
Occasionally, both would have the time to send some texts or make a call to each other. They chatted about what they were doing, what everyone else was doing, what the world was doing. It was inevitable that they would mention a few old friends of theirs.
They both knew that the scion of the Fujimori household was doing well... for the moment. From what they last heard, Ayumu had somehow been rushed into hospital with a broken leg while going to the grocery store to buy milk. They expected little less from the so-called "Ultimate Unlucky Student". The Izumo family were also fine according to the local reviews they shared; Kasumi, the "Ultimate Spirit Medium" was dutifully handling a new part-time job at a local shrine. The same went for "Rokudou Funeral Home"; they expected Saiji to have a full-blown psychotic breakdown from the numerous funerals he had to organise, but then they remembered that he was an "Ultimate Undertaker", that he was desensitised to death, that he could handle it.
One day, Akira went downstairs to watch TV. He used to do this once in a blue moon, but recently it had became much more frequent. His mother had noticed this, and had asked him just why he was doing so, but he remained quiet. Deep down, he wanted to see her cheerful smile. And even far away, at her desk, she knew that he was watching. Another weather forecast. With her at the helm. She rattled on about showers, and dry weather, and temperature heights. Eventually, she delivered her closing speech, waving her hand gently as she exclaimed: "That's Big Sis Marin Mizuta, signing off!"
He could not help himself. Deep down, he knew that she was waving to him. He smiled a bit and shed a tear. She too could not help but think about that boy. As she walked away, she thought to herself, hoping that he saw that gesture.
They both knew it. That even far-apart, the boy of rainclouds and the girl of sunshine would together make a beautiful rainbow.
