I watch out the window. A girl comes up along the road. All I can see of the girl is the huge black cloak she wears. As she comes closer, I notice she has a navy-blue ribbon tying the long cloak shut. I stand and brush off my long, ruffled, blue dress. I look in a mirror and catch a glance at my black hair. Today, I have braids piled on my head. I wove silver ribbons through my hair. I fix a stray braid and walk over to the door. I fling the door open before the girl can knock. She drops into a sweeping curtsy and I see her face. It's red and flushed, and dirty. Her eyes are blue and purple. I feel Dorian come up behind me.
"Hello. What business have you here?" I questioned seriously. I don't know her, but I feel like she's really... familiar.
"U-um... My name is Reyna, Miss." Reyna smiles and drops into another curtsy. "I would like to become the Second Singer of the Court." She glances at Dorian, and I feel a strong sense of betrayal as I see the longing in her eyes. I nod and gesture to her to follow me and walk in. I notice she does not come in the palace, and I turn around.
"My name is Skylar." I decide to show her my nicer side. "Come on, Reyna."
"Thank you, Lady Skylar!" She walks forward until she is almost inside the palace. "Just call me Skylar." Suddenly a huge wind rises and Reyna trips and falls over. Her cloak slides up a little, and reveals her bare feet. They are caked with dirt. I walk over and offer to help her up.
"Reyna, can your parents not afford decent footwear?" I ask carefully. I try not to upset her, but she blushes and covers her eyes anyways.
"I'm sorry, Lady Skylar... My parents could barely afford a new dress..." She parts the cloak and throws off the hood. She has two long, golden braids, and a white dress that is still slightly dirty.
"Well, here you have hundreds of shoes and thousands of dresses at your disposal." I open the door. She gapes and then realizes that she's drooling and closes her mouth. She turns around.
"Thank you so much, Lady Skylar! I-i mean, Skylar." She smiles and walks inside. I close the door and walk away.
In the morning, I put on another royal blue dress, arrange my hair in a spiral, and walk down to the door. Just as I'm about to knock, the door is flung open by an energetic Reyna, dressed in a yellow and green sundress.
"Well met, Reyna." She blushes, and I lead her to my room. "Come on in, Reyna." I close the door, sit her in a chair, and show her the music piece she and I will perform tonight to Lord Dorian and the gathering welcoming the new arrival. It's called Deep in the Meadaow. (A/E/N: Hunger games) I feel like I have seen her before...
"Um, Lady Skylar? This song looks so... simple." Reyna looks at me. I smile sadly."Not this one, Reyna. Mother sang it to me and my sisters..." I trail off, thinking of the night my mother and father took my sisters and left me for dead... I snap out of it. "When we were very young." I rush the last words out and smile again. She seems uncomfortable.
"Oh... ok? Well, do I have a concert uniform?" I gesture over to a black and navy-blue dress. She stands up and puts it on as I turn around.
"Done, S-skylar!" I turn around and smile I reach toward her hair.
"Now we have to...?" The instant I touch her hair, she backs up and slams into the wall. "Lady Reyna?" I adopt a more formal attitude, and she blushes into her hands.
"Please don't touch my hair!" She sighs sadly. "I'm sorry, Lady Skylar. You can do my hair if you wish..." She undoes her hair, revealing a long, beautiful French braid, coiled and intricate. I smile and walk forward.
"Can you do that same French braid, but wrap it into a bun? And can you do me, too?"
---3 HOURS LATER---We walk down the hall. Reyna looks serious. I smile at how nervous she is. I push the doors open and we walk down the room and stop in the middle of the room. Dorian and the rest of the court are sitting in chairs in front of us. I close my eyes and we begin to sing. Our voices meld together, and at the end, Reyna takes on the next song, a sadder song and, while her voice is lovely when together with me, I notice that she has an angelic voice. She's truly a Syren. Wings of light sprout from her back. She seems so, so happy, and she gains a sadder tone. I walk forward as she stops singing. "Welcome, Reyna Lucia, Syren of light." I smile at her. Reyna closes her eyes. Within a few heartbeats, the newly Named Syren opened her eyes, which contained a new spark. "Hey, Skylar! I would say that it's been a while, but we just spoke!" As she laughed to herself, her wings solidify into obsidian.
