Luke is working hard outside in the barn. Since my parents are gone I decide to finally make my move on him. He’s been helping my dad out for a while and being away for college has stopped my persuasion of him. I pour a glass of lemonade before walking outside, our dog Gordon following me out. He trots in front of me and beats me to the barn. With the door slightly open I see Luke petting Gordon. He greets him before raising his head, seeing me looking in from outside. A blush spreads on my cheeks before I walk in; the glass of lemonade is dampening my hands.

“I thought you might want a drink,” I say, holding the glass up. “It’s so hot outside.”

Luke smiles and leans straight, accepting the cool glass from my hand. He walks to a bale of hay and sits down. “Thanks, I appreciate this,” he says, holding the glass up as if cheering.

I cross my arms against my chest, suddenly feeling uncomfortable. Luke is a good looking man and probably has tons of women going after him. “It’s really no problem.” I look down at my feet, kicking straws of hay. Gordon is lying a few feet away with his tongue hanging out, dripping with saliva.

“Feel free to come sit beside me,” he says suddenly, causing my head to jerk up to meet his gaze. He’s patting the hay spot beside him.

Walking slowly to the hay bale, I lower myself onto it. Because of being too stiff, this isn’t much of a comfortable situation. I lace my fingers together, looking to the other side of the barn to see my horse, Dazzle, eating hay. Yes, her name is Dazzle—I was five when I got her so don’t judge. Without realizing it, I’ve been nibbling on my bottom lip. I instantly stop and take a quick glance at Luke to see him staring right back. Before redness can paint my cheeks I turn my head forward again. How much I become so bashful in front of him? Usually I’m confident when it comes to guys. None of them were serious; a voice in the back of my head answers my question. That is true. No guy I have flirted with I never saw as anything serious. With Luke however, I can see myself dating him.

            “So, how was college?”

A smile turns up on my face. “It was fun,” I say, turning to look at him, “Freeing really. I love my parents, but it felt nice being on my own. And the parties weren’t all that bad.”

Luke chuckles, his smile doing things to me no man has ever done. “What do you plan to do now?”

I sigh and look down at my lap, my hair falling—shielding my face from his gaze. I move my hands behind me so I’m leaning back a little and cross my feet at the ankles so I can sway them back and forth. “Honestly, I have no idea. I mean, I love the farm. The animals are my babies, but there’s nothing much to do out here with my college degree.”

“You majored in zoology right?” he asks, catching me off guard.

I raise an eyebrow. “You know my major?”

He nods. “Yeah. Your dad talks about it all the time. He’s proud of you.”

The smile on my face gets bigger. “Dad wants to work at the local vet office, but part of me wants to get away from here—explore the world.” The smile drops from my face. “I know that’s never going to happen though.”

“You don’t know that,” he interjects.

            “But I do know.”

Just then I hear the sound of my dad’s truck pulling up to the house. Gordon stands up and shoots out of the barn to greet them.

“I should go,” I say, getting up and looking down at Luke. “This is nice—talking—I mean. We haven’t really gotten a chance to know each other.”

He nods, smiling and holding up the empty glass. “Thank you for the lemonade once again.”

I take the glass, his fingers brushing against mine. I notice his eyes shift to my lips when it happened. “Of course, I’ll see you later.”

This is just the beginning of many encounters with Luke.
