It's been weeks since I started training for the basketball team. I got in. Hanna was ecstatic. I've changed a lot and everyone seems to notice. I aced my prelims exam, my teacher was actually surprised. They also want me to join the different clubs on school. Now, I'm super busy. But I'm enjoying every moment of it, knowing that Hanna was beside me every step of the way. She's been busy too, with cheerleading practice and all. Our first game for the season is next week. My whole team is counting on me; they actually voted me as team captain. It was a first time on the history of basketball on my school to have a junior team captain. I was flattered that my teammates actually voted for me. I thought Hank was gonna be captain since his a senior. Now I'm on the "POPULAR SIDE." (Would you actually believe that?) And since then, girls are lining up to have a chance to talk to me, Hanna was annoyed by the fact that Girls are following me everywhere. Clarence suddenly became old news. I'm the trending topic now. Today was Thursday, an ordinary day for the old Martin, but a Day to look forward to. I was walking down the halls when Katie, the new girl approached me. She was pretty. She just transferred from Oxford High. She looked like she was lost.
"Um H-hi, could you please help me. I'm lost. Where's room A401?" She asked shyly while blushing.
"Sure, that's my next class." I said casually. I started to walk and she followed me. She looked nice. She would really get along well with Hanna. When we reached the classroom, Hanna was on our usual seat already. She looks like she needed a break from all this. She looks haggard. I sat next to her. She didn't even bother to look at me. She just looked straight. Mr Smith entered the class and everyone brought out their home works. Still, Hanna still ignored me. I'm completely annoyed now, and for the whole duration of the class I was thinking of a possible mistake that I did to piss her off, but I couldn't think of anything. Biology ended and Hanna just collected her things and got out of the room without a word. David approached me; he's also a basketball player.
"Whoa, dude what happened?" He asked, surprised by Hanna's sudden coldness.
"I don't even know." I said confused. David and I walked out of the class and into the gymnasium. Basketball practice usually last for 3 hours but now since the game is only 4 days away we're extending the time for practice. We are the defending champion so the pressure is overwhelming.
"So as you all know the game starts on Tuesday, as defending champion, we have to win the opening game. I know the pressure is starting to creep up on each and every one of you. But remember, the school's name is at stake. So you better work hard. Martin, as team captain, I expect you to lead the team into victory. Martin you know what to do." The coach said.
"Guys, it's now or never. We gotta represent our school with pride. We gotta win this game. So who's with me?" The team cheered and started practicing. We we're all on game mode. I was excited as to it is my first game as an athlete and I'm really going to give it my all. This game is dedicated to my beloved Hanna. We were in the middle of practice when the school cheer squad entered the gymnasium.
"Ok that's 10 minutes break guys." Coach Anderson announced.
I saw Hanna talking to Dina and decided to approach her to know what the hell's wrong. She turned around and when she saw me she started to walk away, I grabbed her arm and spun her around.
"Hey, why are you avoiding me?" I asked as I looked into her eyes trying to understand.
"Nothing, I just don't feel like talking to you." She said trying to avoid my gaze. I know something's up. I let go of her arm, and she walked away. Everything's a mess between the two of us right now. Hanna's obviously hiding something from him, it seems like our friendship are on the rocks these past few weeks. I hope we could fix this.
More weeks past, Hanna's still ignoring me. We won the game, but she wasn't there to congratulate me or even celebrate with me. I miss her already. I miss the old us. The times when she was always by my side, cheering me up when I'm sad. I miss her laugh, the way she smiles, the way she looks at me. I still can't figure out why she's been avoiding me. I didn't do anything to upset her. Maybe it's because of the girls, but I didn't entertain any of them. I also avoided contact with them. It feels like I'm going insane just trying to think of a possible reason that would set her off. And then it hit me, What If she doesn't wanna be friends with me anymore? What If she grew tired of being by my side? What if she already found someone that will take over my side? Tears started to well up on my eyes, I couldn't live with that. What if it's already too late for me? I wiped my eyes and started for the door. I gotta know what's wrong; I have to do something before it's too late. I'm going to Hanna's place. I gotta let her know how I feel tonight. It's now or never. I got into my cat and started the engine. I drove away, I was constructing the words in my mind when my phone beeped, It was from an unknown number.
Hanna had an accident. She needs you know at her side. Please Martin, be here. We're in Sacred Heart Hospital.
I was alarmed by that text, I turned around and headed for the hospital. I completely forgot everything I was about to say. Hanna was on my mind. What happened to her? Who texted me? I was near the hospital when I saw a famiiar car, It was Clarence's. She was with Hanna? I parked my car and killed the engine. I got out of my car as fast as I could and entered the hospital. I saw Clarence sitting on one of the plastic chairs with blood all over his clothes. I walked towards him. I was about to punch him when the doctor appeared, My eyes filled with tears.
" What happened? Is she ok?" I asked trembling.
"Hanna's condition is critical, she's under observation for twenty-four hours, She lost alot of blood, her leg is also broken." The doctor said evenly. I broke down, I let my emotions took over, This is really bad. I can't lose her. Not now.
