chapter two
school finally ended. i was going home again.
i gulped. i wish my father won't beat me up tonight. my body still hurts. i think i'll die if he touches me again tonight.
i walked towards my house slowly, keeping my head down.
the front door of our house was locked. my father must have went somewhere. i pushed the mat away and my eyes widened when the spare key wasn't there. i searched the bushes and the windows but it wasn't there. how will i get in?
i sighed. such cruel life.
i jogged towards the sea. i can stay there for awhile while waiting for dad.
i dropped my bag and took off my shoes. i went near the sea where small waves catched my toes. i just stared at the sea while the sun set. it was a breathtaking sight. i've always admired sunset.
after the sun set, i went home to check if my dad was already there but apparently, he was still out. i went back to the shore and decided to camp for awhile.
the air and wind became colder. i shivered. i wonder when or what time will dad get back. the temperature out here is so cold that my teeth were chattering.
i hugged myself, trying to put some heat.
hours passed. by the time i was quite sure dad was already home, i can't stand up anymore. my muscles were frozen. i can't move them. i was so cold i can't stand up.
no. i need to stand up. i need to go home.
i tried again and failed.
i need fire. but where can i find fire? there are branches around but i have no matches. plus, i don't know how to make fire using stones.
i'm doomed for the night.
when my eyes couldn't hold it any longer, my eyes drooped and i fell asleep.
the next day, i woke up because of the loud crash of waves. i was surprised i didn't die in cold. thank the heavens above.
i smiled and got up.
when i turned the knob at the door this time, the door opened.
i was about to open the door to my room when i heard my father's voice.
'where were you last night?' he asked angrily.
i spun around slowly. 'i got locked outside when you left and i decided to camp at the shore,' i answered.
he grimaced. 'what a dissapointment. i thought you died.'
i cringed.
before walking back to his room, he gave me one of his hateful glares.
i sighed heavily and flopped on my bed.
i sneezed.
oh damn. i didn't die but i caught a cold. prefect.
i prepared for the day and made my way to school, sneezing the whole time.
i sighed. now i know why tissue and handkerchief are important.
i entered the school grounds and was greeted again with nasty comments. i tuned the all out.
i once again entered english with no one there. i took my seat and stared at the board blankly.
the seat beside me moved and i looked up and saw andrew hale.
i immediately brought my hood up and looked down. the air between us felt very awkward.
'sorry,' we both said at the same time.
we looked at each other in confusion.
'we started in the-' we said at the same time again.
he laughed. i looked down again and blushed.
'hey. sorry about yesterday, i didn't mean to pry. i was just upset that you weren't talking to me. it was kind of new to me. you know. most people talk to me but you don't,' he said.
glad i amused you, i thought.
i just nodded.
he sighed. 'how frustrating,' he muttered.
i looked at him. 'sorry. i don't really talk... much,' i said and turned away again.
he started to say something but the bell cut him off. thank god.
the students piled inside and took their seats. everyone glared at me. i looked down and nervously tapped my fingers against my desk.
a hand grabbed mine and stopped my tapping. i looked up and saw that the hand belong to andrew.
'sorry. it's kinda annoying,' he said and let go.
'sorry,' i whispered to him but i know he didn't hear it. it was just loud enough for my own ears to hear.
at lunch, i expected to see andrew at the lake. but thankfully, he wasn't. i still own the place.
i sat down and begun playing.
soft wind ruffled my hair.
i stared at the lake while i played my flute. the place was enchanting. the lake's water glowed. the flowers and grasses that surrounded it was alive and healthy. it was everything someone like me could ask for.
when the bell rang, i immediately took off and went to my next class.
i was about to get inside the classroom when i noticed andrew dusting off his hair with leaves and stomping his right foot to get rid of a twig.
a small chuckle escaped my lips. now i know where he have been. i wish my melody had entertained him.
