Before I stepped foot here for the first time, I was a student of St. Mary's Peparatory School whose classrooms were just some wooden structures here and there. Mind you, it was interesting enough for a 5 year old kid. In addition to their uncemented floor, they had that 'merry go round thing' and a seesaw. What more could you want?!😊
Some time later, upon recommendations from my very own teacher at St. Mary's, my mother got me admitted at Petra International School. As every kid who didn't want to leave what and who he knew, I cried my heart out to be sent back. With a little soothing, some coins and a handful of toffees, I was shown to my desk in the Primary 1 classroom.
I pretty don't remember what went on in the first two periods and came back to my seat after break with my brother Kelvin. A stern-looking teacher walked into the class and began writing on the blackboard. I was sure he'd gotten lost or something because he wasn't the one who taught us in the early hours of the day. Our own teacher came in a while later, sat down and began marking our books. Momentarily, this new teacher started speaking some language and before I could take it all in, my brother yanked me up and I realized the whole class was standing. 'Bonjour monsieur', the class barked with the exception of Kelvin and I of course.
Resuming our seats, I was asked to say 1-10 in French. 'Me?!', I mused. 'Yes', came the reply. I just stood there akimbo. I was about to be lashed, which wasn't how I envisioned my first day in a new school when our own class teacher told the now-I-presume-to-be-the-French-teacher that I was a new kid. He left me, asked a girl and she recited something which definitely sounded like Chinese Mandarin in my head at that time.
I wasn't myself after that. The bus which was supposed to take us home broke down in the middle of the road on our way home and so I took my supper, which was fufu, at 7pm instead of at 5pm.
I went to sleep knowing that I'd been welcomed at Petra International School.😊
