After helping Layla get her schedule and find her class, he promised to see her at lunch before heading back to his math class. When she entered a very flustered Mr. Peters opened the door. The class was filled with giggles as he took his seat. "Right, where were we?" The teacher asked, cleaning his glasses.
"You said we could get to know you, but you freaked out when we asked if you're gay." A football player laughed from the back of the room.
"There is nothing wrong with being gay, I was just saying that I am not gay." Mr. Peters tried to explain, ears turning red.
Riley raised her hand and he gulped, "Yes Miss?"
"Riley, my name is Riley. I just wanted to know how old you are, you look really young." There were a few murmurs of agreement.
Some of the red left his face and he actually smiled, "I am 22, I finished school early and wanted to help people find joy in learning like I did."
Half the class swooned while the other lost interest. The questions continued before the bell rang. Riley and Avery continued to their next class. "He seems nice." Avery said, trying to ease his friends troubled thoughts.
Riley smiled in thanks and they entered their English class. "Oh god." Riley rolled her eyes seeing the teacher. The teacher sat at her desk already looking Avery up and down, twirling a strand of her brunette hair around.
"Hello hello, how was your summer?" Dixie, Miss Anderson, grinned. She too was a werewolf and was actually the one and only person Avery had ever been with. Avery liked older women and they had hit it off last year when he was helping with float building for school. Riley told him it was a bad idea to get involved with a teacher, how ironic, but he got lonely when he couldn't find his mate and Dixie was a great past time.
Riley ignored her and went to find them a seat while Avery approached her. "You look good Aves." She whispered biting her lip.
"Avery?" They both turned to see Layla standing in the door, watching them hesitantly.
He instinctively took a step away from the teachers desk, "Hey! You're in this class?" Layla nodded and they walked to seats next to Riley who was unsuccessfully hiding her laughter.
The lesson proceeded with Dixie giving Avery sultry glances while he tries his best to pretend he didn't see them. When the bell rang, he let out a breath of relief. "Avery, a word?" Dixie's voice stopped him before he exited. Riley rolled her eyes and dragged Layla to the cafeteria. The door shut with a click as Dixie locked it, running her eyes over him.
"I missed you." Dixie smiled. Avery waited for his wolf to rear away from a woman who wasn't his mate but it didn't happen. He sighed in relief and confusion about the Layla predicament as he grabbed Dixie and kissed her hard. Their mouths moved desperately against each others and their hands wandered. Avery went to unzip her dress when Dixie pulled away, "I have a class and you have lunch."
Avery slowly backed away and watched as Dixie fixed her hair and makeup, "Just wanted to remind you that you have my number and you know how to use it." She winked before opening the door, letting students in and Avery out.

When he got to lunch Riley and Layla sat with a few other people. Riley shook her head and wiped her thumb on Avery's lip, removing a lip stick mark before anyone could see. Everyone went about their business and chatted while the nagging feeling of being near Layla came back.
"So Layla, do you like the town so far?" He started.
Layla smiled at him, "So far yes, I don't think my dad is impressed cus he's a big city guy but my mom seems to like the change in pace."
Avery nodded, searching her face for that missing spark. "Just the three of you? No siblings?"
Layla shook her head no, they talked some more but he still felt like he was missing something.
"Do you guys only have like 2 classes after this? Your schedule seems short but the classes go on for so long." Layla asked as they walked to their lockers.
"Yeah I've got Art and Journalism but Aves here has Shop and Engineering. It's a weird set up but I promise you'll get the hang of things." Riley explained, they all went their separate ways. The gnawing to know Layla kicked in. He ran after her and grabbed her hand.
"Hey! Do you maybe wanna check out the town after school?"
Layla looked down at their hands and smiled, " I can't today but later this week I would love to!" She did the unexpected and kissed Avery's cheek. Practically beaming as she made her way to class. Avery turned with a frown, no spark. What was going on?
