Once upon a time, a queen ruled over a large kingdom. She had an only son who was the would-be ruler of the kingdom. The prince was a tall handsome young man now. So, the queen thought of getting him married. But she wanted to have the most beautiful princess as her daughter-in-law. Several proposals came from different royal houses for the prince. But no princess could meet standards of the queen.

The word went around that the queen had rejected a number of princess. So, a charming beautiful princess decided to meet the queen. She wanted to know that type of girl the queen wanted to go for. So,she made up her mind to go personally and see the queen. The princess sent a massage to the queen ahead of her departure. So, the queen got a beautiful room in the palace ready for her to stay. When the princess reached the palace, she was led to the room for her.
The queen wanted to know how sensitive the princess was. So, she laid two green peas on the bed meant for the princess. Over the peas were spread twenty mattresses. The princess lay over the mattresses at night. But she couldn't sleep at peace. The two peas kept feeling hard through the twenty mattresses till the next morning.

When the princess woke up, her body was aching all over. Here and there could be seen bluish bruises on the delicate back of the princess. Seeing this, the queen accepted the princess as a suitable bride for the young prince.
