I never thought we would be battling each other at any point! I don't like to hurt people, at all.
One kid raises his hand. "Like, are we actually going to fight each other?" He asks.
To my surprise, the teacher nods.
"But that's going to hurt!" Someone shouts.
"I know, I know," the teacher shakes her head. "I don't like it either, but the school board has decided to test you, so I am forced to have you battle each other."
I catch a quick glance from Vanessa and turn back to the teacher. "You will all be paired with someone for the first round," Mrs. Wainser explains, " You will not be paired with you're elemental opposite unless needed, and there will be three battles a day that the whole class will watch."
I shake my head. This is messed up. Making kids fight against each other? No way! But just as I'm about to protest, Mrs. Wainser speaks again.
"If you refuse to battle, you will fail this class and be suspended from school for a week." She speaks as if it pains her to do so.
What makes this so important that the consequences are so brutal? Who is behind this? We have always been taught to not use our elementals for bad. Is this considered using it for bad?
I look up at Aaron, and he looks down on me with worried eyes. I know what he's thinking. Elementals can kill you. You could be burned alive, crushed by rocks, drowned. The possibilities are endless.
I know Aaron might seem a little goofy inside, but if the time comes, he's very sensitive and sweet.
Before the class can start muttering, Mrs. Wainser talks again. "The first battle is George against Jenna." George, the red head who spoke up earlier, stares in amazement. And Jenna looks down at the floor.
"The rules are simple. Battle until the other is unable to continue," Mrs. Wainser says. "Everyone but George and Jenna, come with me!"
We all follow her to the far side of the dome. I watch carefully as the teacher presses a button on the wall and glass wall falls a couple inches from my right shoulder.
Vanessa looks at me with wide, terrified eyes. "We HAVE to watch." she whispers.
I just nod my head. This is unfair.
"George! Fire bender! Jenna! Air bender! Ready! Fight!" Mrs. Wainser's voice echoes through the dome, and the two competitors stand there in shock.
Eventually, Jenna thrusts out her hand, catching George off guard and sending him flying about six feet backwards.
George seems to realize this isn't a joke, and his eyebrows furrow in concentration.
He puts his palms together, and I notice a small, flickering flame growing quickly in his palm. This is when stuff gets real.
Jenna jumps in the air, gliding about 7 feet high. And kicks out, sending a slightly visible air blade. George notices and waves his hands in front of him as a shield of fire.
When the two elements collide, they both dissipate. George kicks out, sending a wave of fire Jenna's way. But before she can move, it hits her square in the legs, and she falls over, screaming.
"Jenna!" George exclaims, running over to her. She tries to stand up, but she falls right back over with an anguished cry.
I look over at Vanessa to see she's holding back tears. To comfort her, I grab her hand and squeeze before letting go. She looks at me and I try hard not think that I'm trying to comfort myself more than I am her.
"Jenna is unable to continue! George, please take her to the infirmary." Mrs. Wainser announces. George glares hard at her, than gingerly picks Jenna up and carries her out the door.
"Next battle, Quinton against Dani." Mrs. Wainser says, looking at her clipboard. Whispers fill the air and I can feel everyone's eyes on me.
I'm ready, I tell myself. I can do this.
The glass wall lifts and just as I am about to walk out, I feel Aaron grab my arm. He looks at me with worried eyes, then let's go, and I step out and into the center of the dome.
Quinton extends his hand to me, and I shake it before stepping over to my side of the dome.
"Dani! Light bender! Quinton! Earth bender! Ready! Fight!" The teacher repeats, and Quinton wastes no time.
He stomps on the earthy ground with his bare feet, sending a large crack shooting though the ground toward me.
I jump high in the air and send a ball of light shooting toward him. I can feel my eyes changing to white and a small smile creeps on my face at the familiar feeling.
I land with a soft poof and realize that Quinton created a rock wall to protect him from my light ball.
To bad we aren't outside. I could be a lot stronger, but oh well. I hear Vanessa gasp as I run up to his earth wall, touch it with my finger, and watch it explode in a ball of light.
I really don't like doing this. Fighting other people like this is wrong.
Quinton is now trapped in a ball of light. He screams out in frustration, then screams another time when he tries to thrust his hand into the side of the light orb only causing him more pain.
I could just end it all right here. But I don't want to hurt him. But I have no choice! The voices in my head battle back and forth, until I decide on something.
I raise my arms horizontally beside me, close my eyes, and take a deep breath. I start to rise into the air a little bit. Perfect.
When I release my built up power toward him, the light dome will take most of the damage.
I'm about four feet in the air now, and I think my power is charged enough.
In a fraction of a second, my eyes open and my hands clap together at the speed of light, and everything goes white for a moment.
I hear screams and whispers all around me as the white disappears. Leaving a rather dazed Quinton. Good. The light orb took the damage. I sigh in relief.
"Quinton is unable to battle! Dani, please take Quinton the the infirmary."
