It was a rainy July afternoon, with predictions of cyclone coming in next four days. Most streets were empty, shopkeepers were closing their shops to go home and prepare for the upcoming cyclone. While most shops were closing, the old fortune teller was watching the rain drippling down in front of her, sitting on the balcony of her home above her shop. At first glance it seemed like she was lounging there, oblivious to the heavy rain pouring down but looking closely believers would feel as if she was in the middle of seeing the future, listening to the omen of gods.
The fortune teller was once quite famous since all her predictions came true but then one day, she predicted the downfall of a great business tycoon of the country. Initially everyone thought that the fame has got to her head, she was predicting anything to get more attention. But then the unexpected happened. The great business tycoon, worth millions in those days suddenly became penniless. It was a shocking riches to rag story. The tycoon then sought revenge from her, destroying her beautiful shop on the magnificent Tehran street, the busiest street of the city, where all the rich people came. Before anyone could realise, it was not just fall of the tycoon but also that of the fortune teller. As a result, she came here with whatever she had left with her and bought the current shop cum home, she has been living and hiding in, ever since, from that tycoon and his powerful contacts. Over a period of time, she has now got some regular customers, mostly people who are able to handle the truth whether it be good or bad come to her. Through them she is able to meet her two ends. She has regained her reputation, albeit in the underground this time, that whatever she says will come true for sure. Other than that, she lives a closed-out life now. Those around her know very little personal details about her and nothing about her past. For them she was a part of tavern and got left in this city one fateful day. Since then, she has made a living here. Initially using the little money, she had when she got separated from the tavern and now, she is making her ends meet through this small shop.
Suddenly the fortune teller jolted out of her chair, as if she saw some bad omen. Eyes wide open, tension and worry written over here wrinkled face, she frantically searched on the street from her balcony for something but seeing the street still empty, she went back inside as if to prepare herself for what is about to come next for her.
With day drawing to a close and no sign of rain stopping, some of the people who were still there also started going back to their homes, deserting the street completely empty. Just then a fleet of black sedans arrived. It was quite an unusual sight for the homeless residents inhabiting the streets' footpaths for past so many years. The centre black Volvo suddenly came to a halt in front of the dilapidated shop of the once famous fortune teller. The black suited bodyguards came down from the cars ahead and behind opening the door of the centre Volvo for the elegant, eight months pregnant, Y/n, wife of their boss, the most feared mafia don, Kim Taehyung. Signalling rest of the bodyguards to stay outside, she went inside the fortune teller shop with her personal and most trusted bodyguard, Park Shinye.
To say, she was surprised at the sight in front of her would be an understatement. When she first heard from her friends at the party about the great fortune teller whose predictions never came untrue, she initially ignored them thinking they are just being conned by a street smart. However, when all the predictions really came true, in front of her own eyes, she couldn't help her curiosity. Just like any mother, she was curious about her unborn child, about the child's fate and to save the child anyhow she could. But what she forgot is that curiosity killed the cat. The fortune teller told the predictions not the ways around. Fate once written can't be changed, this she forgot.
She now stood in front of Jung Jihyo, the fortune teller. Jihyo looked at her, as if she was already expecting her. Taking a seat in front of Jihyo, Mrs Kim finally broke the icy silence surrounding them, "If you're the fortune teller, you must know why I came her". "I know why you came here but the question is are you ready to accept why you came here and above all what I'm about to tell you", came Jihyo's reply.
"What do you mean?", Y/n's voice was now weak, laced with fear
"The future is not always rosy and never how we want it to be. Sometimes it's best left untold. If you still want to know then please go ahead and phrase your question."
Being the wife of mafia head, she knew how to read in between the lines.
'That means the future is bleak, however if I know it then maybe I'll be able to change it', she thought to herself.
Gathering her courage, she finally asked, "I'm here to ask about destiny of the child I'm carrying right now"
After taking three deep breaths, Jihyo started looking in her fortune ball. "This child will be surrounded by blood in his adulthood. He will see three major blood baths in his life involving his closed ones and it'll be in the third blood bath that a choice will have to be made. Either of them could only live. Most probably it'll be his father, who will die, in his hand. Kim Taehyung's death will finally bring an end to his reign of terror. But what remains to be seen is if this child will start the next cycle or finally bring an end to this once and for all", Jihyo spoke it all in one breath.
Releasing the breath, she didn't know she was holding until now, Jihyo looked up to find the face of Mrs. Kim and her bodyguard completely pale.
"Is there any way to change the destiny?" Y/n sked, her lips trembling
"I can only tell the destiny, the solution you have to find on your own. Only thing I can suggest is to accept the future, there's not much in this that you can change. The earlier you accept it, better it will be for everyone", Jihyo sighed.
Shinye was now fuming in anger. 'How could she say something like this about the boss and his child!', he thought. Not able to take this insult anymore, he took out his gun. But Mrs. Kim stopped him. "She is just telling what she sees, Shinye. This is not her fault. I asked her about it. Moreover, I never believed in these prophecies. Let's not waste our breath in this. Whatever will be the future we'll face it then. It's about time we leave." Saying this Mrs Kim moved out followed by her bodyguard.
While leaving, she asked Shinye to not tell about the prophecy to anyone and not to bother himself much with it. Afterall, she was a student of science and believing in all these future, destiny or prophecy would be against her principles and teachings. Only thing she was taught to believe in was present.
