Dread.

Complete and utter dread was all that (Y/n) felt during the awkward car ride home.

The air was still with tension. The girl's shoulders taut while a mixture of jealousy, anger, and annoyance flowed through her veins. Her eyes were glued to the windshield, gaze stuck on the headlights of the cars that passed on the opposite side of the road. The bright lights blinded her, leaving her vision spotty, but she didn't care.

Anything was better than looking at her brother. She could feel his gaze lock onto her in small intervals. Whenever he reached a stop sign, red light, or even a small stoppage in traffic, he would look at her. Eyes peering, waiting for the very moment that she would gave in and lock eyes with him. The very moment that his words could pounce and attack her.

He was ready.

A vulture disguised as a business student. Black framed glasses, striped suit, and a plain, black briefcase. He was a walking stereotype, but he absolutely loved it. He basked in it, reveled in the feeling of being the ideal child that his parents would always use to remind (Y/n) of what she should become. He was a reminder of everything that she was not and he loved it.

At least that's how (Y/n) felt. To her, everything he did was out of mockery. Every surprise visit to the house. Every 'good luck' message. Every phone call. His entire being seemed so malicious. She hated his encouraging words, his bright smile, his stupid suit, and even stupider degree. She hated that she would have to become just like him and there was no one who could get her out of it all.

She hated looking at her brother because he reminded her of everything that she was sacrificing to become just like him.

"So... how was school? Are all of your classes going okay so far?" Rei asked, voice piercing through the stiff air.

He saw how tense his sister looked, and though he didn't know why, he had hoped that small talk would help.

The girl's breath hitched in surprise. Her tactic of ignoring the man beside her had completely failed and now she was being sucked into a conversation that she didn't want to be apart of.

"Um... it was alright. I've been reading ahead of the lesson for a few of my classes," she quietly responded.

As she spoke, she mentally recollected herself, taking in small breaths to gather the courage to look at her brother. By the end of her sentence, (Y/n) had turned her head, eyes shifting to gaze at her brother's frame.

Rei had noticed her shift in gaze from out of his peripherals. He took a short moment to make sure that the road was clear then turned his head to flash his sister a soft smile. (Y/n) returned it with an awkward, lopsided smile back before his gaze was fixed onto the road again.

The second year quickly shifted her gaze back towards the windshield as well, quickly ending the interaction before it could truly continue. Her hand instinctively reached towards the radio, wrist turning to the right as her fingers adjusted the volume. She scrunched her face up a bit in displeasure as jazz music flowed through the speakers.

'Of course he listens to jazz music while he drives,' she mentally scoffed before changing the station to something that was more to her liking.

(Y/n) did everything that she could to prevent her brother from talking to her. She maneuvered her body, making sure that her knees and shoulders were facing her car door while her eyes gazed out of the side window.

Every so often, she gazed at her phone with the brightness on its lowest setting so that he couldn't see that she was in fact scrolling away at nothing at all, only swiping through apps, never clicking one hoping that time would magically go by faster.
