“Hurry up or you’re going to be late for your first day!” Dahlia called out to her daughter.
Alissa pocked her head out of the bathroom door to look her mother, her fingers moving clumsily as she tried to finish tying the ribbon on her uniform, “Why do I have to go… What if they don’t like me?” She disappeared back into the bathroom.
Dahlia rolled her eyes and walked over and into the bathroom. She picked up the brush that Alissa had put on the counter and started to brush out the child’s hair, “They will love you Lissa, trust me.” She ran the brush through her long dark hair, “And you have to go because you have already missed three days.” They had moved into a small motel room after the fire, her mother not having had time to take her to school yet.
“Just be yourself and everything will be okay.” She cupped her face in her hands, “I’ll pick you up after school so wait for me out front, think you can get there on your own or do you want me to walk you?
“I can walk by myself.” Alissa said quickly, trying to act grown up. Her mother laughed softly before giving her a tight hug then fixed her clothes for her.
“Love you Lissa.” She kissed her forehead.
Alissa moved away, walking past her she picked up her bag from the floor and went to the door, “Love you to mom!” She called to her before leaving.
The cold morning air nipped at the bits of skin that weren’t covered by her clothing, her hair moving a little from a small breeze. A tiny smile came to her face as she walked down the street towards her school. She loved the morning; it was when the world seemed the most magnificent to her. Her shoes made soft click noises with each step she took, it sounded like a strange kind of music to her and she soon found herself lost in the thought of the sounds. Lost in deep thought she paid no attention to direction or time, soon finding herself running into a solid body.
“I’m sorry.” She said quickly, taking a step back and looking up at the person. Piercing blue eyes stared down at her, sending chills and fear running down her spin.
A sweet smile crossed Claudia’s lips as she stared down at her, “It’s alright Alissa, just pay more attention next time.” She steeped pass her, walking away.
Alissa let out a sigh of relief before looking to see where she was, finding herself in front of the gates that led to the school. She fixed her clothes to make herself look presentable before walking up to the large old building and going inside. The inside reminded her a little of church, a bad feeling bubbling in the depths of her body, she made her way towards her classroom. Her mother had brought her the week before so she could see where everything was, and wouldn’t get lost.
The sound of children laughter greeted her when she opened the door, it all stopped once she had stepped inside the room. They all stopped what they were doing, turning their full attention to her, watching her as she walked up to the teacher, not knowing where she was to sit. The teacher stood and smiled a little at her.
“You must be Alissa, we are so glad to have you finally join us. Go ahead and take your seat, it’s the empty one in the middle of class.” She said softly before sitting back down.
She said nothing to the teacher, down casting her eyes while she went to her seat so she wouldn’t have to make eye contact with any of the other kids. Soft whispers wisped past her as she kept walking, getting to her seat and quickly sitting down. Her eyes stayed glued to her desk, trying to ignore what was being said around her.
“I heard that her mother is the town whore; don’t know who her father is…” A girl a few seats away whispered, “She’s damned, God will never accept her.” She giggled softly along with her friends.
Alissa squeezed her eyes closed to fight back the urge to cry from the words, her hands balling into fists. In her mind she imagined the girl’s head hitting the desk, shutting her up. The whole class went silent before someone screamed, making her eyes shoot open and look over. The girl that had been talking’s head was on her desk, her lower lip trembling in pain, blood covered her desk and the side of her face, some of it dripping to the floor. Alissa stared in shock, having a sinking feeling that she was the one that had done it.
The teacher rushed over to the girl, picking her up carefully, she rushed out of the room to go to the nurse. Cold eyes turned Alissa’s way as soon as the teacher was gone. Their eyes held anger and fear; one by one they got up and moved towards her, circling her.
“You did that didn’t you?” A boy spat.
“You’re a witch, and will burn for it.” A blonde girl snapped.
“You’re damned! A demon here to try and steal our souls!” Another girl shouted.
Tears filled Alissa’s eyes, her head dropping as she listened to everything they yelled out at her. When they were done talking they started to pull her hair, her clothes, and sometimes hit her. She felt something cold hit her in the head, the smell of juice hanging around her as they poured the contents of their lunch on her. She cried in silence, doing nothing, it stopping only a few minutes later.
The door to the room opened and the teacher walked in, looking at her class. The students had moved all their seats and desks close to the walls, leaving a large empty circle around Alissa, along with the mess they had made. She walked to the chalk board, picking up a piece of chalk.
“Shall we get started with class then?” She asked, shooting Alissa a dark look before smiling brightly at the others.
