Being a photographer is really not as easy as everyone makes it out to be. A lot goes into, what people like to call, this "hobby", especially here in LA. This is the place people come to make it big time, to make a name for themselves or just become successful. Hell, I should know seeing as that's exactly why I moved here.
I'm originally from Camden, Maine which is a very small town close to 4,000 miles across the country. I guess you could say that's kind of a drastic change to make, and trust me I feel it, but just like everyone else trying to make something of themselves, I too had to jump on that bandwagon. Trust me when I say I love my hometown and all, but let's be honest here, there was no way I was going to make it big in my little town of 5,000 Camden residents. So, here we are.
I've lived in LA for a little over a year now and can honestly say I'm beyond blessed to have found the job I have. Here's a little backstory: When I first moved here all I had was the little money I saved up from working various jobs, my camera and (not to sound corny) the ambition to actually succeed at what I love doing most. I lived in a little apartment as someone's roommate, and that was totally cool, but just as quick as I moved in with them, I moved out. Not literally, but that's just me telling you guys that I landed this rad job and made a good amount of money so fortunately had the opportunity to move out like a month later.
Anyways, it's all a weird story how I got this job but we'll save that for another time. Okay, coming back to present time, I'm now working with a small, but successful, company as a full time photographer. It's super cool because not only am I pursuing my dream/dream job, but I get to make my own schedule, not like that matters since I literally have no social life. Which is probably why I'm so successful to begin with because all I do is work and let me stop talking about work now...
Today, I'm scheduled to meet with a potential client in regards to, can you guess it? That's right, a possible photoshoot! I honestly don't know too much about her except for the fact that she's well known on social media for living a lavish like lifestyle, but even then I have no idea who she is. We're scheduled to meet at noon for lunch, and it is now 11am therefore meaning I need to go into full rush mode.
Usually, when meeting with clients I try to dress according to who they are (or what little I may know about them) to really help the process of possibly gaining them as new clients. It's honestly the small things that stand out the most and it's so easy to do because it requires so little effort.
I walked alarmingly fast into my closet, and with my client in mind, decided on a strapless black bodysuit with some fitted blue jeans, paired beautifully with some black Louis Vuitton booties. Don't let the LV booties fool you, I still have the fashion sense of a bum on my days off, but have to dress up in order to really sell myself. Wow that whole selling myself part sounded a little weird, but you guys get it.
After transforming my bum like attire for something a little more nicer, it's time to transform from the neck and up. I actually curled my hair last night for a shoot so I'm left with some nice loose, natural looking waves this morning. Again, don't let this fool you either because my dark brown almost black looking hair any other morning? Unrecognizable. I applied a coat of powder foundation which is the best thing for a photographer in LA, a couple heavy coats of mascara to really lengthen my long lashes that act like they aren't long without any, and a dark nude matte lipstick. It all sounds so simple, but I promise it looks way better than what you guys are envisioning.
After all is said and done, I once again walked like those people who only go to the mall to get their daily walk/workout in, to the kitchen for a pre-snack before lunch. I found one of those chewy granola bars, grabbed my unusually large purse that holds unnecessary objects and my laptop/ipad and headed for the door.
