The next morning I wake up to a pool of tears and an excruciating headache. I struggle to keep my eyes open since I had just woken up, and they were puffy from tears. A look at my phone tells me it's 5:00 am. "Quite a lot of time to get ready," I mumble to myself. I stumble up and pour myself a glass of water. Magically, the headache is gone. It baffles me, really. "Hope! You're up earlier than 10 minutes before your class," I hear Ayesha remark. "Ayesha, what are you doing up so early?" I ask her, puzzled. She always studies so late at night, how is she awake so early? Well, last night was... different. "Morning prayer, we have to wake up before the sunrise," she replies, without me having to ask. I nod slightly. She wasn't mad anymore. Big surprise. No, not really. Ayesha isn't one to hold grudges, I like that about her.
The rest of the day felt completely normal, Ayesha stuffed some food in my stubborn mouth hole, but that's about it. I felt a bit guilty now though, considering Ayesha now looked after me like I was a pre-schooler. Except, one spectacular thing did happen that day. Something I'd been waiting for for the longest time. "Alright, students, enjoy your winter break," Mr Stanhope said at the end of the day. I long cheer erupted in the classroom as the tired and sleep-deprived students made their way out of the room. I ran out the room with the rest of the stampede, my hair being tugged by zippers and my shoulders being crushed under the pressure. All that didn't matter, all that mattered was a break. One long winter break, away from assignments, projects, deadlines, stress... people. You can't forget of course Christmas was coming up as well!
That evening I was lying in bed scrolling through Pinterest, listening to music, the usual lazy afternoon. Ayesha was out to get some fancy fast food on the little money she had saved. I wasn't going to eat fast food, of all things. I just came out of consuming absolute zero calories for weeks on end, suddenly shoving oily fries and beefy burgers down my throat wasn't going to work out so well. As I was admiring a wonderful architectural masterpiece I had to take an earphone to check for a knock on the door. Yep, Ayesha was probably home. "Coming!!" I groaned as I literally rolled off my mattress. I opened the door and saw Ayesha with a paper bag that had the Carl's Jr symbol on it. "You bought Carl's Jr with the little money you had left?" I asked sarcastically. Ayesha giggled as she walked in. "I'm just treating myself, geez Mrs. Diet!" she teased as she closed the door behind her. I rolled my eyes and went back to my mattress. "Oh don't you dare think you're getting away with not eating. I spent precious pennies on this, Hope!" Ayesha warned as I got back in place.
"Ugh fine..." I agreed reluctantly.
"Don't worry I didn't get you an oily burger," Ayesha said.
"Then what'd you get me?" I asked, rolling my eyes.
Just as Ayesha opened her mouth to deliver a snappy reply a got a call on my phone. It was my mom! But why?
"Hi momma!" I squealed cheerily into my phone. I had it on speaker so Ayesha could hear too. "Hope! Darling, pack your bags! We've booked you tickets back to Toronto for Christmas!!" Mom squealed back. Ayesha and I screamed and hugged each other. "Oh my god! Yay, finally you're going home Hope!" Ayesha congratulated me. "EEK. Yes, thanks Ayesha!" I replied, "Oh gosh, thank you mom! Send me the flight details, I'll be there for Christmas this year!" I cut the call and started packing right away. I'm finally going back home. Home, sweet home.
