- Present Day –

Blurry moonlight, rainy sky, cold wind, glowing skyscrapers, and crowded roads. It was a typical evening for the infamous Gotham City. Even under the night clouds, the citizens themselves never gave the city permission to fall asleep. The roads were full of puddles, honking cars, and people running here and there while covering their heads from the rain. Some just enjoyed the raindrops with their umbrellas while walking down the street.

Among them, a woman just finished her shift after working all day long in a small diner downtown. Not to mention she had to bring her 4-year-old daughter to look after. Running down the sidewalk in such a rush while carrying her child, she knew she was too late for the bus. From a distance, she could see the bus was leaving.

"Hey! Please! Stop! STOP!!" She shouted, but the bus kept moving faster. Then, she realized it was useless. The bus was too far away. She sighed and decided to take shelter in the bus station.

"Mommy... Wondie is cold... Let's go home, Mommy," the child grumbled while hugging her stuffed Wonder Woman doll.

Seeing the rainy sky up above them, it seemed that the rain was getting heavier, she thought. If they chose to stay, they would be stuck for quite some time. At least, until the next bus, which was in two hours.

"Can we use a cab, Mommy?"

"Oh, Sweetie... If we use the cab, you and Wondie can't have ice cream tomorrow," she said softly and calmly, even though actually her money had been really tight to fulfill their own daily needs.

Then, she decided to find another bus stop. For that, she needed to go through a dark alley near her current bus station. She took a few steps inside while holding her daughter tightly on her chest to protect her, seeing that every alley in the city was prone to any kind of robbery.

"Mommy... I'm... scared," the child whispered in fear of the darkness.

"Good! The baby girl has the right to be scared, doesn't she?" That mysterious voice was echoing from the other side of the alley in front of her. A man showed up in filthy clothes with a gun in his hand. His psychotic grin was such a horror that made her veins went cold.

"It's not your lucky day, aye? Show me what you got... or else..."

"We have nothing... I swear!" She cried.

"WRONG ANSWER!!" He yelled.

"Please... don't hurt... don't hurt us!" She took out her wallet with her shaky hand. The man harshly grabbed it and grinned widely at her.

"Good. Now, go to HELL!" The man pointed his gun at her with no mercy.

SNAP!!

Just before he shot them, his gun was suddenly destroyed by a batarang from above. They looked up and saw the Caped Crusader was standing on the roof building.

"Batman?! Oh, shoot!" He immediately pulled out his dagger. Batman quickly jumped down to stop him.

BRAK!! BRAK!!

Punches, kicks, and attacks between them, all of those were trembling under the rain. No matter how hard the man hit him, in the end Batman could easily get his head on the ground without putting that much effort in his fists. Amateur robber, he thought.

"Okay, okay! I surrender!" He said, feeling beaten. Batman loosened his grip and saw him putting down his weapons and the wallet he had just stolen. Scared even to see the face of the Bat Vigilante, he ran away.

"Batman... Thank you for saving us..." She said in relief.

"I believe this belongs to you," Batman took the wallet and gave it to her.

"Batman... Where is... Wondie?" The little girl asked frankly. "Is she... with you? Wondie... Wondie!" She showed her doll to him.

That name.

That question.

One of the hardest questions in his life.

As if the world just turned upside down inside him in... sorrow.

He looked into the girl's innocent eyes and answered her with a smile of hope, even though that smile was meant to cover his long-lasting pain.

"I'm sorry, Batman. My daughter is a little chatty. Don't mind her..."

"Good night, ladies," he excused himself by swinging up the roof with his line launcher, leaving the woman and the child down below.
