"You know what?" Malik shouted in Marley's direction steam coming off his voice, "I should have never gone along with your stupid idea to go on a road trip!" Marley rolled her eyes annoyed by his constant whining. 'Guys.' "You could've stayed home if you were gonna act like a big baby about a little bit of cold." Her voice shook as she continued to pretend like she wasn't just as tired and cold as he was. 'Guys.' Malik turned his head to glare at her, hating her every gut right now. All he wanted to do was go home and settle in bed right now, but instead he was stuck on the side of the road with no vehicles in sight and two dead phones . "GUYS!?" Malik and Marley turned around looking at their friend they had completely forgotten about.
They gave her a this-better-be-good-or-we'll-leave-you-behind, kinda look. Hannah furrows her eyebrows not liking the look, crossing her arms she hissed, "Well if you weren't so caught up in your little dispute, you'd know I've been calling you two for a while now." Malik raises his eyebrow as a way of telling her to go on, "I have to use the bathroom." She muttered loud enough that they could hear, Malik and Marley both give each other a smirk and Malik jokes, "Well there's a perfectly good forest right behind you." He waves his hand out motioning towards the snow covered woods.
"No way! I'm not peeing like an animal." She shivered at the thought of using the bathroom out in the open, although that might've just been the cold hitting her. "Suit yourself." Marley spoke as she turned around and resumed her walking, Malik doing the same. "W-wait..." Hannah sighed, her arms falling to her sides in frustration, "Just don't leave, stay put I'll be behind those trees." Malik smirked as if he had accomplished something astonishing and unbelievable. "I am so telling everyone about this." He snickered, taking out his phone.
Marley scrunched up her nose, grabbing a chunk of dirty snow from the ground, "Gross you weirdo!" She threw it, hitting Malik in the back of his head. He dropped his phone on the ground causing it to shatter on the ice. "Great going you soulless freak now we don't have a phone!" He picked it up, brushing it off with his glove pouting just a bit at the thought of not having a phone anymore. He got up and brushed off his jeans, his dark brown curls now covered in chunks of snow and dirt. BANG!
Malik and Marley whipped their heads around in the direction of where the gunshot went off, "Hannah," Marley said in a hushed tone; they made eye contact before running off towards the trees. Marley's heart sank at the sight of nothingness. No Hannah. No footprints. Not even the person who fired the shot, just a trail of fresh blood against the clean white snow. Marley brought her hand towards her mouth, a pool of tears gathering in her eyes. "No." She could feel her legs weakening at the thought of Hannah out there hurt.
"Come on! We have to find her," Malik said motioning for her to follow him into the woods. She gulped down a breath of air, her heart rate spiking slightly. She glanced behind her in hopes that a car would pass by and they could get out of there, but alas no vehicle came. Marley nodded as her ginger locks fell in front of her eyes; she quickly jogged to keep up to Malik. They kept their heads down following the trail of blood that became less and less the longer they went on. When the sky started to darken the snow began falling in a flurry making the both of them stop to rest at a rotting tree. "How much longer do you think we can keep on going? It's freezing out here." Malik whispers the last part, rubbing his arms in an attempt to keep his blood circulating.
Marley grins ear to ear, "Not long, not long at all." She leaps up from her spot trudging towards him. Malik looked at her confused, breaths of smoke coming out of his mouth in thick spouts. "W-what do you mean?" Marley chuckled, grabbing him by the arm pulling him up pointing at something in the distance, "A cabin!" She exclaimed bouncing up and down. Malik sighed in relief before jogging ahead in the direction of the cabin.
Eventually they had reached the cabin. It was a decent size and it had been made with a dark brown wood- possibly pine or cedar- that looked like it would crumble if a leaf were to touch it. The windows and door were painted in a deep navy blue and the porch was missing several boards along with a railing. The door swung open and closed everytime the wind blew making an almost animal-like screech. Marley released his arm, her mouth opening slightly into a grin at the sight of the cabin. But her smile quickly dropped into a worried look when she ran up to the cabin door flinging it open. "H-Hannah," she throws her hand over her chest running over to her friend. Hannah was curled up next to an empty fireplace, her black hair covered in snow and her nose a dark blue hue. Her once light grey scarf was now painted red in a thick coat of blood and wrapped around her thigh. Hannah's icy blue eyes were closed and covered in a frozen layer of tears.
"Hannah wake up you have to wake up!" Marley sobs shaking Hannah's body, "Quit it Marley, you're just making things worse." Malik says, grabbing Marley's shoulder pointing to the gushing wound on Hannah's thigh. She looked up nodding her head slowly backing away from Hannah. "W-we should get some wood then, to start a fire you know." She tried to hold back the tears but they continued to flow out anyway. "Yeah... yeah we should."
The following day Marley was in the same spot next to Hannah and Malik was standing by the window watching the snow come to a stop. Hannah groaned, trying to roll over nevertheless failing miserably as her wound wouldn't allow her to. "H-Hannah!'' Marley trembled easing Hannah back in place. "What's going on?" Hannah mumbles making eye contact with the ginger haired girl in front of her. Malik was standing awkwardly above them with a pitiful expression written all over his face quickly putting his normal facade on he clears his throat, "We need to go before it starts to snow again."
"Where Malik? We don't even know how far our town is from here," Marley whined. Malik ignored her crouching down to Hannah taking off his scarf. He unwrapped the one around her thigh and tied his in place of it. "Lets go," he grabs Hannah bridle style grunting slightly and Hannah winces, Marlley frantically gets up grabbing her shoes and throwing them on.
"How long have we been walking out here?" Hannah asks, her pasty blue lips hardly
parting. "A few hours at most," Malik says, sliding her off his back and onto the ground. She yelped before realizing she had landed on the side of the road, pavement... she pondered. "HEY! STOP HOLD ON!" Malik and Marley start shouting, shocking Hannah, she looks up to see a truck a few yards away beginning to yell at it as well. The truck stops a few feet away from where they were standing, Malik lifts Hannah, slinging her arm around his shoulder and making their way over to the vehicle. "Thank god you stopped, can you give us a ride, our car broke down a few miles back and you're the only vehicle we've seen. " Marley pants hanging off the guys window, he looked to be in his late 30s and had a reddish brown beard. He wore a black and red jacket with a black cap that had a picture of a red truck on it.
"Sure thing, where we goin' kiddos?" Marley let out a breathy chuckle of relief hopping in the back, Malik placed Hannah in the back and he hopped in the front seat. "Winona, Minnesota," Malik chimed buckling in.
After a few hours of driving the man pulled up to a gas station. "I just gotta run an errand real quick so stay put," The guy says slamming the door shut. "I don't think we can wait any longer, it's starting to get really bad." Hannah states in a strangled voice, her injury had started to leak a thick green substance and she was sweating like crazy. Malik notices it and starts to slightly panic, "Yeah okay, I think we should get him to hurry up." Malik stammered rushing out of the truck. Just as he was about to walk into the gas station he overheard the man talking about them, "They think I'm going to bring them home."
Malik backed away from the door rushing to the car hopping in the driver's seat, "Okay we have to get out of here." He turns the keys and starts up the car putting it in reverse, "HEY! WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING!?" The guy thundered running at the truck but Malik had already made it out into the road. "Oh my god Malik! What are you doing!?" Marley shouts looking back in the direction of the man standing in the road angrily. "We need to get home ourselves. He wasn't planning on bringing us home." Hannah gives him a worried look, beads of sweat rolling off her pale skin, Marley gives him a nod in understanding through the rearview mirror and proceeds to soothe Hannah. Around half an hour into them driving they see a van similar to the other guys van at the gas stop.
"Is that?" Marley starts, "The men," Malik sighs, finishing her sentence. Hannah starts to sit up but ends up getting pushed back down by Marley, "What's happening are they following us?" She asked in a weak voice, Marley looks at her and nods her head making her heart drop to the pit of her stomach. "GET DOWN!" Malik shouts as a bullet penetrates the back window and out the front one. Lunatics! Malik thought as he took a sharp turn to the left taking the men off guard as they ran into an electrical pole.It was currently the middle of the night and Malik had pulled up to the hospital. "Come on give me your arm," He says, throwing her arm around his shoulder, Hannah's limbs went weak making him pick her up fully, walking into the hospital entrance a nurse immediately attends to them. She grabs Hannah a wheelchair and brings them to a room where Hannah got greeted by a doctor. "Wait, where are you taking her?" Marley jumped up from her seat.
"Don't worry, we just need to get this bullet out and she can go back home in a day or two," He chimes flashing a friendly smile their way. She lowered herself back down on the chair and cupped her hot coco snuggling into her blanket. "She'll be alright, she's strong," Malik said sitting in the seat next to her. After Hannah's surgery she had gained full consciousness and had woken up to Marley happy sobbing and scolding her. "Don't scare us like that! I thought I'd lose my only friend," Marley said flicking her on the forehead. Malik looked at her and he crossed his arms, "Oh wow, what am I dead meat?" He laughed, turning around sarcastically.
"Alright you should be good to go tomorrow morning," The doctor said, setting her chart down. "Thank you, sorry for troubling you," Hannah smiled groggily. "No problem it's my job." The doctor says walking out.
"You should go home. I bet your parents are worried about you," Hannah said grabbing Marley's hand. "But what about you I don't want to leave you alone?"
"I'll be fine. I have a whole hospital full of people here." Malik smiled weakly and took Marley out of the room. The next morning Hannah was practicing her walking around the halls which had gotten efficiently better. Her doctor spotted her and walked over,"Hannah you're good to be released today," the doctor said, catching her off guard. "Really?" He smiled and nodded, she went back to her room to get changed and got discharged.
Hannah had walked home with much difficulty since her house was close to the hospital. She stood outside on the sidewalk contemplating whether she should go inside or not. She stared at the cracked paint on the house and the snow covered trash that filled their yard. They were the only yard in the neighborhood that looked like that. Her dad was hardly home and Hannah was always too busy to take it out. She made her way onto the crumbling cement steps opening the screen door and yelled, "I'm home!" Slipping off her shoes.
"Where've you been?" Hannah's father on the couch said, he had short light brown hair along with a stubbled face and icy blue eyes that matched the ones on Hannah's face, he wore a white tank top that couldn't actually be considered white since it had grease and food stains smeared all over it. He held a cigarette one hand taking a few puffs here and there and a remote in the other. "Nowhere just out partying," She said making her way up stairs to her room. What a way to be welcomed home... she sighed in her head flopping down on her bean bag.
