Sunday, October 29
I disembark from a cab in front of The Foxhall Court, a trendy gastropub in Back Bay to meet the girls for a boozy Sunday brunch. I pay my fare and head inside the restaurant, where a perky hostess asks for my reservation. I reply that it's for four under the name Bennett, she looks down the list in front of her and asks me to follow her to a table near a large window overlooking the street. I immediately spot Shawn's familiar long, now thankfully blonde ponytail. Shawn acknowledges me with a nod which causes the other two to whip around in their seats and wave-like little kids. As if I can't see Lyra's obnoxiously vibrant purple sweater amongst a sea of white. I sit down beside Shawn and she hands me a menu, just as a waiter fills up our water glasses which is going to come in handy once the booze starts flowing. The waiter steps away to give us some space to decide what we want to order, completely unnecessary since this has been a long-standing tradition. I take a sip of my pre-ordered mimosa when Lyra asks,
"Hey, where are the twin monsters?"
"You mean my kids, the ones I had to go through 72 hours of labor for? I left them with grandma, let them annoy someone else for a change", I retort
Emily looks affronted at my comment about her god babies and before she starts to defend them,
"You try living with two hyperactive four-year-olds 24/7"
She shrugs and nods in agreement, all of a sudden Lyra's phone goes off and she makes a disgusted face,
"Cameron?", we all echo referring to Lyra's older brother who has a bad case of dropping into town rather unexpectedly
"At least this time he gave me a heads up about when he's in town! How courteous of him!", she finishes off sarcastically
I grin at Emily knowing for all the hate she gives him when push comes to shove shed stand up for him in an instant. Cam and Ly have a unique relationship, he's always mooching off her for money since their parents cut him off and she keeps handing him opportunities on a silver platter.
"Come on! It can't be that bad....look at Lex he's just as lazy as Cam, maybe even more"
"Well, your brother has a job and a family. All my brother does is smoke weed all day, and it's not even his"
"What about the company? You mentioned that he finally listened to your Dad and started his own company"
She scoffs," He run a company? He can barely put on his pants without someone helping him"
"Hey, I went through his financials and so far, I don't see any need to be worried. I'd say he's pretty good at this", Shawn interjects
"When did my brother contact you!"
"Not your brother, Spencer", she whispers the last part, and for good reason
Lyra looks like she's about to explode, she's about to ream Shawn out in front of the whole restaurant before she remembers where we are. She lowers her voice,
"You spoke to that manwhore?!", Lyra's completely red and her eyes are practically bugging out of her head.
Spencer Clark, is Cameron Bennett's best friend, business partner, and the bane of Lyra's existence, they've hated each other since the beginning of time and every time someone even mentions his name she goes off into a long tirade about how much she can't stand him. We've asked them countless time exactly what happened between the two of them, but that only clam up even more. Shawn clears her throat and proceeds to talk about her next trip to South America, she's doing an article for the magazine about the best vacation spots to visit on your honeymoon, which is weird considering she hates the idea of romance, but each to their own I guess. I share a skeptical look with Lyra at how exactly Shawn plans on writing the article when she doesn't have a romantic bone in her body. We call over a server and place our orders and she also refills our glasses. I just love bottomless mimosas, especially the ones here, all fruity and they do not skimp on the alcohol.
