summary; maya had a really rough day at work, and she needs you.

warnings: soft, kisses, mentions of a car crash, mentions of death, not super angst tho i promise

you felt very cosy in your apartment, it was almost pinterest worthy how cosy you were. candles were dotted all around your living room setting a warm glow and your couch cushions were absorbing the gorgeous smell of gingerbread that poured from the beige wax. your current favourite movie, ten things i hate about you, played quietly on your tv screen as you sat comfortably on your grey couch, a cup of tea and book in hand, while you wrapped yourself up in a cream fleecy blanket.
after about thirty minutes of reading, you felt your eyes beginning drift shut. a smile spread over your face as you thought of your beautiful girlfriend, maya, and how she would hopefully be home in a few hours, and how she would hold you in her arms as you fell asleep for the night.
your eyes then snapped open at your stupidity. you had left your candles on, again, but that too made you smile. that was how you and maya had met, after all. you left your candles on as you took a nap, resulting in your curtains catching fire, and setting the whole room alight. after that you had moved in with maya, being nicknamed firefly by the squad, and you had both agreed that there would be absolutely no candles in your apartment.
that rule lasted about three days before you went out and bought a tonne of candles for 'decoration'.
flash forward six months and there wasn't a surface that didn't have a candle on it, varying in size, colour and scent, but maya grew to accept your candle obsession over the year and half that you two lived together, the candles were a lighthearted, unspoken thing between the two of you.

as you stood to blow out the various candles, you heard the sound of keys sliding in to the lock and jiggling roughly. you turned around, expecting the door to open, but it didn't, the sound of the keys kept ringing out until you heard the metal fall to the floor and a very heavy groan of annoyance followed. you recognised that groan anywhere, it's the same groan you hear every second thursday, when maya wakes up extra early to make you pancakes and ends up burning them. it's fine though, because she puts enough whipped cream and strawberries on top that you don't even notice they're burnt.

you walk towards the door, glancing at your watch and seeing that it's only 9:45pm,
maya shouldn't be home for another hour or so.. you thought to yourself.
opening the door, you were faced with a very tense maya. her hair that fell a few inches below her shoulders was tousled and she was still in half of her gear, just her bunker trousers and black station 19 t-shirt. she looked rough to say the least, like she had had a hell of a day.

your girlfriend's eyes poured into yours, sadness and stress clouding them and causing you to frown.
"maya? what's the matter?" your voice was soft as you reached forward to take her cold hands into your warm ones. they fit perfectly together, as they always did, and you walked her slowly into your cosy apartment.
"maya, talk to me," you said as she stopped walking. she pulled her hands from yours and placed them on either of your rosy cheeks, pulling you in for a passionate kiss.
she walked you backwards, slowly, until your back was pushed up against the wall and her hands were buried deeply in your hair, pulling just how you like it. she began to moan into the kiss and push her pelvis closer towards yours but, much to your lip's protest, you broke the kiss, and her head instantly tucked itself into your neck
"maya," you whispered, stroking her tangled hair softly. "maya, you don't have to tell me what's wrong, but please look at me".
her head lifted up and her tear filled eyes stared into your concerned ones. changing the mood, you placed a sweet kiss to her lips and rested your forehead against hers. "i love you" you whispered.
"i love you" she whispered in return. her voice was fragile and wavering as her tears began to fall down her pink cheeks.

"hey," you kissed at her tears and caressed her cheek. "go and get changed. i'll call the station and put the kettle on, sound good?" she nodded at you, smiling, as she turned and walked into your shared bedroom.

when you called the station, travis answered and he didn't seem too happy either. he told you all about the trauma that they had been called to a few hours prior; the car crash, the little old couple that has sadly lost their lives and how in the back seat of their car, maya had found an engagement ring with a bunch of roses and a note, confessing how much one loved the other. he explained that maya held the hand of the old man, who's name was pablo, and he told her how he loved the woman who was driving with him, how he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.
vic was making the woman, mary, comfortable as there was truly nothing else that they could do. he then explained how maya had pulled pablo's gurney so he could be next to mary, who was still buried in the car wreckage, and how the old couple held hands as their breathing slowed and eventually came to a stop.
travis explained to you how he hadn't seen maya that upset since their first loss more than five years ago. he understood that she needed the rest of tonight's shift off just to be with you and he wish you both well as you hung up the phone.

maya was already under the blanket on the couch when you walked back into the living room. you handed her the steaming mug of tea and kissed her forehead as she scrolled through netflix, trying to find a good film.
"what about.. the notebook?" she sniffed in between words. you looked over at her, shaking you head no softly, as you took the remote from her hand and suggested dirty dancing.
"i love that movie, you know me so well" she began to cry even more and she was definitely becoming more and more emotional by the second. you knew that there was more to her tears than the trauma incident today, but you didn't press her, you would ask her tomorrow over breakfast.
for now, you were both snuggled under the blanket in your matching pyjamas watching dirty dancing as you fell asleep in each other's arms, in love.
