It was early morning as Ember crawled out of the den. The sun had not yet touched the mountain peaks that were east of the pack's territory. As she stretched, a familiar whine sounded in her ears. Her mother, Berry, had been having nightmares every night for the past two moons.

Ember sighed to herself, poor Berry. The she-wolf was very young, and if she was having nightmares, that meant a despairing fate would follow. She padded back into the den and saw her mother in a most painful manner of what seemed to be sleep.

The only difference was that Berry's eyes were wide open and bloodshot red. Her whole body was convulsing; and her mouth was hinged open in a silent scream of utter pain.

Ember stared in horror as her mother's eyes rolled back and her body stilled. She scampered out of the den and yowled as loud as she could, "Flint! Please come, it's Berry! She's hurt!" She howled the words to the Pack of Strength, wishing them to heal Berry.

A dusty furred wolf ran out of the den behind the camp's waterfall. His long fur flew behind him; the light streaks of his pelt seemed to dance as the droplets of water sprayed him.

Ember had never seen Flint before, Berry has just told her of how brave he was. Ember had expected his blue eyes to hold kindness and sympathy. But instead, she found icy pits of darkness; hatred practically oozed from the dark depths. She trembled as he neared; how could this possibly be the same wolf that Berry had spoke so fondly of?
