His flaming-red fire devoured my cigarette. The tip almost seemed to release a sigh…

Of pleasure?

Of pain?

In my case, it could’ve been both — it was the beginning of a strange connection.

With my eyes still on him, I inhaled and experienced a rapid, burning sensation.

A foul, bitter coughing fit came over me. My throat clenched in fear

I was a stupid girl.

He eased the cigarette away from my fingers and took a long drag. Those shapely lips were taunting me.

I suppose a sense of arrogance came with experience.

Sinuous flames flickered inside me as I met his dreamy gaze.

You,” he laughed, “shouldn’t play with fire.”

What does he know? That’s what I’d like to find out.

I wiped my cherry-red mouth with the back of my hand. I didn’t give him the satisfaction of a witty comeback. Silence was a far better weapon.

His mouth quirked slightly. “Farewell, Miss X.”

For now, John Mellors. For now.
