⚠️⚠️ SPOILER ALERT: scenes from NYC special ⚠️⚠️

Ladybug and Chat Noir entered the NYC sewers, hoping to get away from the American heroes who want to confiscate their Miraculouses. LB was still pretty mad at Chat for coming to New York when she trusted him to stay in Paris. Now the supposedly akumatized Robustus (which is actually a sentimonster), has disappeared into thin air and Ladybug can't do anything to repair the damages caused by the villain.

Both their miraculouses beeped, causing them to go into separate tunnels as they detransformed. Marinette fed Tikki to help her replenish her energy when she suddenly gasped at what Chat Noir said.

"Plagg, I renounce you," Adrien said as he removed the ring from his finger.

"No! Wait—" Plagg tried to protest, but he immediately disappeared as Adrien removed the ring.

Marinette's eyes grew wide with both shock and horror at the thought of losing her partner. She saw a tan arm reach from behind the corner to place the ring on the ground.

"I'm sorry I disappointed you, M'lady."

"Chat, wait! No!" Marinette ran to grab her partner's hand while still hidden behind the corner, but her clumsiness got in the way.

She slipped and fell just as she grabbed Chat's hand, but she fell far enough to not be hidden by the wall that was separating them. What she saw gave her mixed feelings of shock, embarrassment, and guilt.

"A-Adrien..." Marinette said with wide eyes, still clutching on to Adrien's arm.

"Marinette? Yo-you're... m'lady..." Adrien tried to look and pull away, but Marinette was surprisingly strong, even in her civilian form.

"Adrien," Marinette's voice cracked, tears starting to form. "Please, I-I can't do this alone. I'm so sorry. If only I knew then I wouldn't have said those things to you. I would've stayed behind to protect Paris. I'm so sorry. Please forgive me."

Adrien started to cry as he saw Marinette. "Marinette, I—"

"Wait," Marinette interrupted. She stood up, still not letting go of Adrien. She placed his miraculous in his hand and closed it. "I know you're really disappointed in me right now. This is my fault. I'm sorry for saying those things to you. And I know that you fell in love with Ladybug and now maybe you don't love her because now you know she's just clumsy, pathetic Marinette. But for what it's worth, I want you to know that you're the boy I'm in love with. I've just been denying that I've had feelings for Chat because I loved you and I was scared to have to choose. I know it isn't fair to you but please, Adrien, Chat. I can't do this on my own. We've always been a team, even though you might hate me now."

"Marinette..." Adrien said softly. He didn't know what to say. His lady, his bugaboo, has been there for him the whole time. She's the one who convinced his father to let him go to New York even though he knew it could damage her reputation and fashion career. Now that he thought about it, he's always had feelings for Marinette. He's just always been blinded by Ladybug to notice it, and now hearing that she loved him—both of him—it made his heart leap.

Marinette pushed Adrien's hand towards him, clutching his miraculous. "Please don't let go of Plagg," Marinette's voice broke. "I couldn't have asked for a better partner."

Adrien clutched the ring tightly, tears starting to fall. He enveloped Marinette in a tight hug. "It's us against the world, M'lady."

"As always, Kitty."

Adrien pulled away and to put his ring back on. A bright ball of light immediately flashed from the ring. The shimmer died down until only the black cat kwami was left. Plagg looked relieved to see Adrien again. He looked around and saw that Marinette and Adrien have revealed themselves to each other.

"Thank goodness!" Plagg exclaimed. "All this sexual tension between the two of you has been increasingly frustrating. Am I right, Tikki?"

"Leave me out of your problems, Plagg," Tikki said.

An awkward silence fell over them for a few moments when both Marinette and Adrien decided to speak up at the same time, thus increasing the awkwardness.

"Should we—"

"I guess we—"

"Sorry, uh—"

"You go first—"

"No, you go—"

"I insist—"

"We're not out of the woods yet," Plagg sighed.

Marinette cleared her throat and straightened up. "I guess we should head back to the hotel?"

Adrien nodded and let Marinette lead the way. Adrien eventually had enough of this tension and decided to take a stand. He grabbed Marinette's arm and made her look at him, much to Marinette's surprise.

"Marinette," Adrien said firmly, "I realized you've always been more than a friend to me. I never knew why, but it was just the way I felt. I just tried telling myself that you were just a friend because I was too blinded by Ladybug. I'm now starting to see how similar the two of you are. You're both Ladybug and Marinette, with or without the mask. And me—I'm a totally different person as Chat Noir. And I know the timing is weird right now, but I love you Marinette, M'lady. I love you whether your the girl who sits behind me in class, or the superhero who saves Paris, or the designer who creates the next fashion trends and album covers. I love you, Marinette. Will you be my girlfriend, bugaboo?"

Marinette was too stunned for words. Was this really happening? Only one way to find out. She grabbed Adrien by the scruffs of his shirt and kissed him. Yep, he was real, alright. She felt a sense of familiarity when their lips connected. Her memories flashed back to when she first kissed him when they were fighting Dark Cupid. She let out an internal scream as realization dawned on her that she's already had her first kiss with Adrien before.

They pulled away blushing, their foreheads resting on each other's. "Is that a yes, bugaboo?"

"It's a yes, Kitty."

When they got back to the hotel, their classmates were waiting for them at the steps. They were just about to greet us when a car suddenly pulled up. The door opened automatically and revealed a screen mounted on the back of the headrest of the passenger seat. Gabriel Agreste looked sternly at Adrien.

"Adrien," he said, "get in the car. I never should have let your classmate convince me to let you go on this trip."

Marinette pleaded for Adrien to stay, but Gabriel was firm. Adrien pulled her aside where his father can't see. "It's alright, Marinette. For once, I don't feel so alone."

He kissed her forehead, much to the shock of their classmates. "I'll see you back in Paris," he said with Chat's signature smirk and wink, and with that, he was driven off to the airport.

Marinette watched as the car faded into the distance, too mesmerized by everything that was going on. Her thoughts were interrupted when her best friend squealed. "GIRL, I NEED DEETS!"

Marinette was suddenly swarmed by her classmates asking how it happened and where did they run off to. Chat had to return momentarily to defeat an akuma, and returned to his plane just before it landed in France.

He watched the news broadcast from the Friendship Day parade in New York as his classmates held banners with his name on it. He couldn't help but smile as he stared at Marinette. In just a few days, he would see his bugaboo again. Honestly, he would wait for eternity if he had to.

Because it was always Ladybug and Chat Noir against the world. Always.
