I sprinted down the main street hill, choking on my own blood and tears, stumbling over branches and litter that were sprawled on the foot path. I ran as fast as my feet could take me, as far as I could get away from that place, it was my house but it was no home to me I could not stand to be there any longer I didn't want to be a part of this living hell anymore.
I could hardly see anything through my tears with it being 2 am and all, the only lighting was the dim shimmer of the flickering street lamps and the light from the moon. I got to the intersection in the centre of the town and turned right, and continued to run, past the pizza shop, past the hardware store, past the hospital and down to where the path turns to stone. I kept on running over the gravel I could feel it cutting at my feet but there was no pain. I was numb.
I came to a sidewalk bench where I sat, bringing my knees to my chest and resting my forehead on them to hide my face. It was silent the small town was dead at this time of night, if there were people around I wouldn't be sitting somewhere as over exposed as here. Everyone in this town knows me, or at least they know my name and my face, to be spotted would end in disaster. Especially if it was someone who was from my age group, I don't have friends they all judge me. 'Oh there goes Darcy the screw up, the sook, the complete and utter failure at life. Why doesn't she just leave already, go somewhere that we don't have to look at her'. Maybe I should just leave run, away. No what am I thinking that was a stupid idea.
My thoughts were interrupted by a small groan; my eyes shot up from my knees and began to search the street up and down to see who was there. Another groan this time a little louder and then I saw it. A figure lay on the curb a little to my left on the other side of the road. I cautiously rose from my spot on the bench and crept over the road to further investigate. Wiping some of the tears from my eyes I stood next to the figure, concluding that it was a boy, or man I decided to roll him over to get a look at his face and see who he was. I knelt down and carefully placed a hand on his shoulder and rolled him onto his back, with one last very painful sounding groan his eyes fluttered open and I was immediately mesmerized by those deep dark brown eyes, I just stared into them for a few moments and he stared back. And then... he rolled back over very quickly and threw up all over the road and a bit on his shoes.
Placing a palm on his head he sat up and stared across the road just looking at the hills above the houses. Taking it in as if it was so beautiful and complete bliss then he shifted his gaze to me and his expression turned to complete concern.
"Oh my god, are you ok? Do you need me to call someone?" He asked in a fluster. His thick British accent filled my ears.
"No," I replied, a little bit too quickly. "I'm fine."
"No you're not look at you what happened?" He said.
"Nothing. Why are you here?" I asked, trying my best to change the subject.
"That all depends on where here is." He said as he looked around curiously.
"Uh this is Bacchus Marsh. Small town about 40 minutes from Melbourne." I replied curiously.
"Oh, well um I am supposed to be in Melbourne. I'm on tour with my band and last night we were at the pub having a drink, or two, or three," I stopped and thought and then his eyes lit up. "I remember," He said slowly. "We ran to the train station and uh oh yer then there was a train about to leave and then the boys pushed me on it and I stayed there because I was drunk and I didn't realise what was going on. I must have gotten off here and passed out or something." He said.
"Ok well I don't think catching a train into Melbourne at this time of night is a good idea, do you have a place to stay?" I asked him
"Uh well this gutter didn't seem so bad the first time I fell asleep here." He said with a small smirk on his face.
"I'll take that as a no." I said. "I have a place we can stay at. If you want..." I said to him.
"Uh yer if that's ok." He responded.
"It's great, being alone is the last thing I need tonight." I said, instantly regretting it.
"Alone? But what about your parents?" He asked worriedly.
"Um were not staying at my place were going to my granny's place, she died and the house just got left there, so I stay there rather than going home sometimes." I told him
"Oh I'm sorry about your granny." He said awkwardly.
"It's ok." I said.
"The house is on the other side of town so we should probably start walking since it's like 3:30 already we should get there by four if you do walk too slowly." I told him
With that he jumped up and held his hand out to help me up.
"I'm Zayn by the way." He said, with a small smile.
"Darcy." I replied, grabbing his hand.
He pulled me up and we began to walk in silence.
